Pledges are getting to be straitjackets for some GOPs

by: Lucy Edwards

A friend called this article to my attention and asked me to post it here. It appears that the Norquist pledge has become a bit of a straitjacket for the right, which is entirely appropriate, since it is not a rational approach to governing a modern economy.
Lucy Edwards :: Pledges are getting to be straitjackets for some GOPs
Representative Jason Chaffetz of Utah has signed a pledge never to raise taxes. He signed another pledge too, one that made it nearly impossible to vote for a bill to raise the nation's debt ceiling. But right before that vote over the summer, in a meeting with scores of his Republican colleagues, he stood up and proclaimed that he would never sign another pledge.

A small step in the correct direction but I will reserve my approbation until they regain their senses completely, which will most likely not happen until they are defeated and retire from Congress.  And probably not even then, since their post-Congress jobs will most likely require a continuing commitment to the welfare of the richest amongst us.

Unfortunately its not just a pledge (4.00 / 1)

It's a kiss up to the 120 corporations that support Norquist. In other words signing the pledge makes a candidate eligible for campaign contributions and meet and greets with the "right" people. Mostly K street types.

Just ask Kelly Ayotte.
