Remarks by veteran GOP official Ray Wieczorek fuel speculation about possible campaign
(Manchester - October 10th, 2011) Ted Gatsas's failure to standup to his GOP fellow colleagues in the legislature has fuelled speculation that he plans a run for governor next year - and is selling out Manchester to secure support from Republicans in Concord. Such speculation grew louder this weekend as veteran GOP elected official and former Manchester mayor Ray Wieczorek added his voice to the chorus of people questioning Ted's plans.
Wieczorek, a long-time member of the Executive Council, expressed doubts about a Gatsas candidacy. When asked by WMUR's Josh McElven, Wieczorek called Ted a "very good friend" but suggested that a Gatsas run would be marred by the fact that he "hasn't served one term yet (as Manchester's mayor)."
"Speaker O'Brien and Sen. Bragdon took $30 million from Manchester's schools and Ted - a former Republican state senate president - has done nothing about it," said Manchester City Democrats chairman Bob Backus. "Maybe he thinks it's more important to have the support of O'Brien and Bragdon for a run for governor than to defend Manchester from downshifted costs and cuts to state education aid."
Backus and the Manchester Democrats are calling on Ted Gatsas to make clear his plans for next year this month - before the municipal election. Gatsas, Backus believes, owes it to Manchester voters to either announce for governor or commit to serving a full term as mayor if he gets past a tough challenge from veteran School Committee member Chris Herbert.
"If Ted wants to clear the air, it's easy - Just announce for whether or not he's running for governor next year," said Backus.
While Gatsas's record of simultaneously increasing taxes nearly 3% while slashing funding for public safety and education wouldn't seem to provide a record of success on which to base a gubernatorial run, speculation about such a run has be raging for months around City Hall.
