Today's House session was an outrage!

by: Marjorie Porter

Wed Oct 12, 2011 at 20:42:56 PM EDT

Not only did we sit through 2 hours of Republican hopefuls spouting party lines, only one veto vote was taken--on SB 91, the sprinkler system bill.  (The veto was overridden, 266-61.) None of the "emergency legislation" we voted on today will be taken up by the Senate until January.  No matter.  It had to get done today.  Some emergency!

As soon as I can get the link to the "vote" on the amendment to SB 198, I will post it.  The "voice vote" happened so fast, I never even heard the Speaker say "All opposed, signify by saying nay."  It happened so fast, there was no opportunity to ask for a roll call vote. Our newly elected representative Peter Leishman was scheduled to make a "parliamentary inquiry."  There was no chance for him to do so.

I drove to Concord on my own dime (no mileage is paid for sessions after July 1) to sit from 10-6 voting on bills that could have waited.

At least I got to be part of the new "girl group"
The Democrat Aparat CHICKS.  Ask me about that!

It looks even worse on video than it seemed at the time.  He banged the gavel down about 2 seconds after calling for the Nay votes.

Guess who was given the honor of leading the Pledge of Allegiance this morning?  Rep. Baldasaro!

That decision is emblematic (4.00 / 1)
of the Bill O'Brien House.

Thanks Marjorie for this report. Revolting lack of respect for anybody from this crowd.

My Twitter feed was filled with the wreckage of yesterday's session (0.00 / 0)
so I Storified it (sorry, can't seem to embed it here)

NH no longer (0.00 / 0)
has a functioning legislature.  It simply has a circus with a power-mad ringmaster.  Why would anyone pay any attention to the presidential primary results from a state whose name is now sullied by this sort of performance.  And what can we say about candidates who speak in the midst of this chaos as if this were normal behavior in a once-proud state?

The Kindergarten in Concord (4.00 / 3)
Yesterday's Session was a perfect storm, a combination of cheap politics, ignorant behavior, thoughtless self interest, questionable legislation and general lack of attention to the needs of the state.  The "guests" were shallow and often so self involved that it was hard to take them seriously.  It was a long day!

not only did we not get paid... (0.00 / 0)
Not only did we not get paid for mileage, we were treated to a lecture by Dan Itse, Chair of the  Constitutional Review Committee.  He scolded us for complaining about the mileage.  Actually, he went beyond scolding us, he talked about (unnamed) members having somehow violated their oath of office by claiming we should have been paid mileage, and he urged them to resign.

Answer me this.. (0.00 / 0)
So by the fact that the House and Senate could not agree on SB 198, that seems to mean that the State cannot correct a $2 million error in welfare funding. Until this is "corrected" in January.

so - does this mean that our needy Granite Staters "get" 2 million extra in welfare funding? Should we be grateful to the House? Or is this an issue of who pays the money - the US or the State of New Hampshire?  Meaning that the House delays causes the Granite State to fund what the Feds otherwise would fund?

Thanks.

Yes (0.00 / 0)
they get the welfare funding.

I'm waiting for the day to finally come (4.00 / 2)
when some highly respected Republican stands on the floor and says:

Mr. Speaker, have you no shame?

No Shame (4.00 / 3)
Somebody has to be listening.

McCarthy got a pass for a long time. Actually the Union Leader made him a hero.

Nothing much has changed.  Don't expect a Union Leader Headline or WMUR in depth investigation of our resident nut cases and tyrants.

Steve Vaillancourt came close - watch the few minutes after the vote. (0.00 / 0)
But of course, he's closer to the Rodney Dangerfield end of the respect scale.
