PIPA/SOPA

by: Mike Hoefer

Wed Jan 18, 2012 at 07:30:00 AM EST

We have not talked a lot about PIPA/SOPA here on Blue Hampshire but we are going to join as we can in protesting these dangerous bills that could lead to internet censorship, security issues, and/or present a very risky operating proposition for sites with user generated content such as Blue Hampshire.

From the EFF

The blacklist bills are dangerous: if made into law, they would hamper innovation, kill jobs, wreak havoc on Internet security, and undermine the free speech principles upon which our country was founded. But deep-pocketed lobbyists are trying to ram this legislation through as quickly as possible, hoping elected officials will turn a blind eye to the widespread opposition to these bills. We can't let that happen.

According to ProPublica Sens Shaheen and Ayotte are supporting PIPA (the Senate version of the bill) and Rep. Guinta is No/Maybe on SOPA (The House version of the bill). Rep. Bass is listed as unknown.

If you feel strongly about the issue you could give them a jingle

- Sen. Ayotte (202) 224-3324 or http://ayotte.senate.gov/?p=co...
- Rep. Guinta (202) 225-5456 or https://guinta.house.gov/conta...
- Rep. Bass (202) 225-5206 or https://forms.house.gov/bass/w...

Would just like to point out (4.00 / 2)
that former Sen. Chris Dodd, beloved by several Hamsters in this community, is also on the pro-PIPA/SOPA side of things as a function of his current position as chief lobbyist and CEO of the MPAA.

Just doing his job, I suppose.

November 2012
Hope for a return to sanity.

I assume (4.00 / 1)
this is the reason Dodd got the MPAA job... for his ability to influence on this bill.

Hope >> Fear

It was disappointing when he took that gig. (4.00 / 2)
More disappointing still today.

Obama's choices of including Biden and Clinton in his admin instead of the others looks better and better every day.

From Twitter:
Thank you Granite Staters for your overwhelming response to the #SOPA legislation. I DO NOT support this bill as currently written! #nh01

Bass opposed also (0.00 / 0)
Press release:
"I have serious concerns that the Stop Online Piracy Act goes too far in undermining the critical freedoms and functions of the Internet in the name of stopping this illegal activity and I am opposed to the bill as it is written."

I am going to have to (4.00 / 2)
re-evaluate my life, finding myself on the same side of an issue as Charlie and Frank. I'm feeling a little queasy...

November 2012
Hope for a return to sanity.

I don't think Bass necessarily opposes this (4.00 / 1)
I think he just sees which way the wind is blowing.

President Obama (0.00 / 0)
had indicated that the White House does not support this legislation in its current form.

Why would the White House support unpopular new legislation (0.00 / 0)
When they already claim the power to shut down websites on the mere accusation of copyright infringement: http://www.salon.com/2012/01/2...

Someone who's visiting Congress this week, noted that the staff in one (4.00 / 2)
office told him they are only receiving about 10 real letters a week.  So, of course, they pay close attention while email goes into the trash, after recording the address.  Writing real letters would also support our postal service.  It's true Congresscritters discouraged real mail by explaining how long it takes for them to be processed for harmful contents, but that's largely because congresscritters don't like hearing from constituents, unless the script is also what we call money.

So I guess we should (4.00 / 1)
write our handwritten notes on the back of a twenty-dollar bill? Or maybe a hundred?

Hope for a return to sanity.

There are form letters/postcards and form emails (0.00 / 0)
There are unique letters and unique emails.

What gets attention is something you wrote yourself, rather than sending an identical message written by an advocacy group whose voice has already been heard.

Using physical mail rather than email just kills trees, delays your message (post-anthrax scare security), and makes work for interns. If you want to convey your message in a meaningful way, write something yourself (not identical text, not sent on your behalf by some org) or call. That's the distinction that really matters.

Why It's a Bad Idea (4.00 / 1)
Even people who make their living as Hollywood professionals are coming out against the bill.   Yes piracy is a problem, but these vaguely worded bills are not the way to accomplish that goal.  These bills were written by people who do not understand how the internet works.  (Or, maybe they understand it all too well.)

Power From the People (0.00 / 0)
It actually worked!
So many Americans have accepted powerlessness.
But here's an example where making noise worked.

And I was unsure about the issue at first, but when I saw the US Chamber of Commerce in favor, I knew I was opposed.

Frank and Charlie? I guess the people pressure was overwhelming. Go team go! More victories to come.

No'm Sayn?
