Have you checked your Occupy today?

OccupyDC, having played host to the folks from around the country who participated in Occupy Congress last week, has now run out of food and sent out urgent requests for refreshments and replenishment. There's a comprehensive list of needs and desiderata on their web page, but I personally favor tools, so I'm sending money to:

Occupy New Hampshire could use some different kind of help.  The Keene group has taken on the task of discouraging the City Council from accepting an armored vehicle from our federal agents of government.  As reported in the SentinelSource,

A number of annual local events are possible targets for terrorist activity, according to the Keene Police Department's application for U.S. Department of Homeland Security funding to purchase a BearCat armored vehicle.
/.../
The Pumpkin Festival and the Clarence DeMar Marathon bring people from across New England to Keene, and thousands of students attend class at Keene State College every day, the application says.
/.../
In presentations to the City Council, police have emphasized the usefulness of the vehicle's four-wheel-drive in off-road rescues, and the potential that the bulletproof vehicle could protect police officers confronting an armed suspect -- uses that are also listed in the application.

But, a petition by 144 citizens to reconsider the acquisition of the BearCat from Lenco Industries, Inc., a small business owned by Leonard and Diane Light of Pittsfield, Massachusetts, was rebuffed by the Keene Council.  So, come this Thursday, January 26, Occupy NH plans to attend the meeting and make the case against getting military equipment for the police, again.

The Sentinel makes the point that

Lawmakers in Washington have distributed some $34 billion over the last 10 years to state and local law enforcement in the name of the war on terror, according to a recent report by the Center for Investigative Journalism.

From 2002 to 2011, $188.8 million of that money was spent in New Hampshire.

A point that's not entirely accurate since the equipment purchased for New Hampshire to use, store and maintain was most likely not manufactured in New Hampshire or in Pittsfield, Massachusetts.  Department of Homeland Security grants, it turns out, are better than earmarks.  Nobody has to claim responsibility for a gift that might be used once a year--unless it gets rolled out for the Memorial Day Parade and Pumpkin Festival.
