Language question of the day

by: DianeR

Mon Jan 23, 2012 at 15:17:24 PM EST

Okay, I give up. What the heck is an "elite"? I keep hearing this from the mouths of the most ardent right-wingers. Newt Gingrich is now using it. Isn't he the epitome of an "elite" with all his money and incorporated K Street think tanks? Does he hope that if he uses this term, people will perceive him as some kind of good ol' boy?

Surely Cole Porter tells us (4.00 / 1)
But in looking for 'elite' I come up dry, so far.

Nonetheless the search rewards me with some lines from You're The Top:

You're a boom,
You're the dam at Boulder,
You're the moon,
Over Mae West's shoulder,
I'm the nominee of the G-O-P
Or Gop!

But if, baby, I'm the bottom,
You're the top!

This lumps the nominee with "a worthless check, a total wreck, a flop".

Well as usual (4.00 / 1)
both of us delve deep into the previous century for guidance! Funny.

Surely a sign of scholarly natures (not age) n/t (4.00 / 1)

top & bottom (4.00 / 1)
The words "Top" and "Bottom" may have each had a double meaning for Cole Porter.

sitting state rep: running for re-election in 2012.

Elite? (4.00 / 1)
Here's some context circa 1945, listen for the phone greeting at 00:16, and the description of the clientele that follows:

Feel free to enjoy the rest of the show "on the house", as Archie might say.

The elite are the top of the social hierarchy, which in Republican land (4.00 / 1)
is defined by inherited connections. Democrats aim to promote on the basis of skill and talent, at which Republicans scoff because they have none. Newt has been doing his academic schtick for decades, but his short tenure at West Georgia College is hardly something to write home about. Tulane, where he got his PhD is a fairly good school, but, when he attended (1971) history was largely a matter of regurgitating what had been written before--not much on his chosen topic, the Belgian Congo--and he's good at doing that.

Gingrich obviously has a high opinion of himself.  That, along with his gift of gab, gets him notice and pay. That he was driven out of Congress seems not to have registered. I think he's clueless.

The irony is (4.00 / 1)
that the GOP, in yet another attempt to project their own foibles onto the left, ascribes "elitism" to the educated left when, in fact, they, themselves, in all their 1% glory, are the actual elite of this country.

From Wikipedia:

(elite)... is a small group of people who control a disproportionate amount of wealth, privilege, and access to decision-making ...

Let's say that for every 1 elite on the left, there are 99 elite on the right.  We've got George Soros, John Kerry (well, Theresa Heinz), Steven Speilberg and they've got GE,Comcast, Disney, the Military-Industrials, the entire Murdoch empire, Romney, Bush, Cheney, etc. etc. etc.

Porter's take:

'The world has gone mad today
And good's bad today,
And black's white today,
And day's night today,
Anything goes

"The future is not something to be predicted, it's something to be achieved,"  unattributed aphorism

Here it is again, on steroids (0.00 / 0)
I can't believe this guy is running for POTUS.

Today on The Janet Mefferd Show, Newt Gingrich said that an intolerant "elite" made up of "secular judges and religious bigots" are trying to promote "radical Islam over Christianity and Judaism." Gingrich, who told John Hagee's church that America may soon be "a secular atheist country, potentially one dominated by radical Islamists," said that there was a conspiracy between the Justice Department and the "Organization of Islamic Countries" [sic] to "begin to enforce censorship against American citizens to protect radical Islam."
