Correction and Apology to Representative Bates

by: Lucy Weber

Thu Jan 26, 2012 at 22:35:42 PM EST

It has been brought to my attention that in a comment I made here, I attributed to Representative Bates  a statement  I am told was made by a different representative.  On rereading the comment, I was wrong to have associated a remark with a specific person's name without being absolutely certain that the association was correct.  To have neglected to check the facts was sloppiness on my part,  and I am posting this diary to clear up the record and to apologize to Representative Bates.

I will be more careful of my assertions in the future.

Doubtless ... (4.00 / 3)
... Rep. Bates will also apologize for his attempt to enshrine discrimination against the citizens of this state into law. And for attacking the loving relationships of thousands of his fellow New Hampshire citizens.

For make no mistake, Rep. Bates is committed to one and only one legislative goal: Stopping a law that has harmed precisely no one and has brought joy not only to those married, but to their families and children.

He is the one who must apologize. Someday, perhaps quite soon, he will be ashamed by his actions.

Hampshire, You Summarize It Well: (4.00 / 3)
Stopping a law that has harmed precisely no one and has brought joy not only to those married, but to their families and children.

I can't believe that any New Hampshire Legislature of the "live free or die" state would for the first time ever take rights away from our citizens.  We just don't do that here.  Not in New Hampshire.  Not in America.

[I'm a former has-been House member and State Senator, but I keep "Rep." on my ID name for easy reference of previous posts.]

Apparently, there are some (4.00 / 3)
in the current legislature who don't agree with you Jim.  The part of the bill that creates civil unions for any two consenting adults is a slap in the face of loving gay couples, both male and female, saying to us that our relationships aren't as valuable as heterosexual relationships, and I think, deep down, that's the whole point of this exercise, as well as to terrorize gay families once again threatening to undue their rights.

This seems as good a place as any (4.00 / 2)
to mention that Rep. Bates and Rep. Shawn Jasper -- whose last known public comment to Rep. Bates was "I have lost all respect for you, sir" -- have kissed and made up.

(Metaphorically only, thank God. The humor value of the hypocrisy were it to be otherwise would be swamped by the mind-shattering horror of the aesthetics.)
