Leonard Matlovich: "A Gay Vietnam Veteran." A Powerful Message For Today As It Was Then.

by: Rep. Jim Splaine

Wed May 02, 2012 at 13:38:27 PM EDT

A gay Vietnam veteran, whose courage was in the battlefields of Vietnam and at home:

I remember well the news media of the day about Leonard Matlovich.  We can't forget him, because his work and cause lives on today, and he's still having an impact in fighting for "...with liberty and justice for all."

"When I was in the military they gave me a medal for killing two men and a discharge for loving one." - Leonard Matlovich.

Thank you, President Obama, and Senator Jeanne Shaheen, Congressman Barney Frank, and so many others for ending that system.

I sometimes think that making the right to privacy explicit in the Constitution (4.00 / 1)
would cover a lot more territory than passing the Equal Rights Amendment.  After all, if everyone is deprived equally, it's not an improvement.
However, the ERA is on the table and only three more states need to ratify.  So, this should be a defining campaign issue in 2012.

The three states are to be found among these fifteen:
Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Nevada, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Utah, and Virginia.

Two Courageous Rye Women Fighting For Equality (0.00 / 0)
Rye residents Charlie Morgan and her wife Karen are two amazing, courageous Americans who are fighting for equality.  Their struggle should remind us of Leonard Matlovich, who long ago was discharged from the U.S. Air Force after "telling" an officer that he was gay.

Readers can learn more about Matlovich by looking at the website in his honor, leonardmatlovich.com.  His cause for equality continues by so many others, like these two Rye women, and all those who believe in the American ideal of "with liberty and justice for all" should be thankful.

Our news media should be congratulated for continuing to cover one of the most important issues of our time -- equality.  There is nothing more important on this planet than the way we treat one another.   Nothing.

If we were cheerleaders for one another, we could end all wars, poverty, and hatred on Earth.  We might never do that, but sure can try.

[I'm a former has-been House member and State Senator, but I keep "Rep." on my ID name for easy reference of previous posts.]
