Maggie Hassan For Governor of New Hampshire

by: Kathy Sullivan 2

Mon May 07, 2012 at 10:02:55 AM EDT

When John Lynch announced that he was not running for a fifth term, I decided not to jump and endorse a candidate immediately. I wanted to wait and see who the strongest Democratic candidate would be by observing the field and  listening to the candidates speak before deciding who best represented common sense leadership in the tradition of Jeanne Shaheen and John Lynch, and who would put together the best campaign.

On each of those counts, there is no question that the best Democratic candidate, and a person I know will win in November and go on to be a great governor, is Maggie Hassan. Maggie Hassan is a forward-thinking leader who fights for what matters and delivers for New Hampshire. I'm proud to support her campaign for governor.

Maggie is a solid, impressive candidate. One of her first priorities was reaching out to the grass roots of the party, which is so important to us keeping the corner office in November. She has picked up the support of several key labor organizations, such as the International Union of Painters and Allied Trades Council #35, the Carpenters Local 118, the Iron Workers Local 7, and the United Food and Commercial Workers Locals 1445 and 791.

Kathy Sullivan 2 :: Maggie Hassan For Governor of New Hampshire
I have seen Maggie speak before large crowds and small. At each forum, she was articulate, with an excellent command of the issues facing New Hampshire, and able to connect with her audience. Her personal story - as a daughter, wife, mother and lawyer - resonates with every person who has had to balance the responsibilities of family and work.

I also have observed her during her years in the State Senate. She has a strong record of advocating for New Hampshire families on jobs and education so everyone has the opportunity to succeed.   As Governor, she will put people first and take New Hampshire forward-by helping to create the best workforce, the best schools and making New Hampshire the leader in innovation by advocating for New Hampshire businesses. Maggie Hassan also will carry on New Hampshire's tradition of common sense leadership.

The likely Republican nominee, Ovide Lamontagne, on the other hand, would be a rubber stamp for an extremist agenda that would roll New Hampshire back decades. Ovide Lamontagne has said he'd be a "radically different" kind of governor than John Lynch.  I've also had the chance to observe Ovide over the years. As chairman of the state Board of Education, he did not want to accept federal education dollars. He believes in government interference with women's health care decisions. He wants to end Medicare and put the New Hampshire legislature in charge of doling out health care to the elderly, subjecting our seniors to the uncertain whims of representatives like Bill O'Brien.

New Hampshire can't afford that kind of radical change.  We need to elect Maggie Hassan as our next governor.

I'm Excited About Our Candidates... (4.00 / 3)
...and I think Maggie Hassan or Jackie Cilley could be great governors.  Kathy -- your words about Maggie are positive and offer good wisdom.

For me, I'm waiting just a little longer to see how the campaigns develop for each of them.  I want the strongest one to take on the right-winger tea partiers who have reduced New Hampshire's government to a lower level in our care for our citizens and our concern for our future.

I've known both Maggie and Jackie through the years, and talked at some length with one about her campaign and I'm looking forward to meeting up with the other in a few days.  Whomever I decide to support I'll be volunteering hard for, because this November 6th -- just 182 days from today -- we MUST elect Democrats.

I hope they each stay positive in the primary campaign, and that their supporters do too.  Our eyes -- and voices -- need to be on those who have worked to destroy our state.

[I'm a former has-been House member and State Senator, but I keep "Rep." on my ID name for easy reference of previous posts.]

Which of Above Doesn't also apply to Jackie? (4.00 / 2)
As I read your comments I was waiting to see what praise of Maggie did not also apply to Jackie. Couldn't find it.

My endorsement (4.00 / 4)
My endorsement is about Maggie; based on my observations, and my years in politics, I believe Maggie is the best of all three candidates. I have been particularly impressed with her grass roots outreach (see, e.g., Chaz Proulx, Jen Daler and Mike Hoefer), and her overall campaign structure. Both pieces will be crucial in November.

I don't recall a time (4.00 / 8)
that I was as torn between two candidates as I am in this case.

I have read, YouTubed, and cogitated for hours on end.

The only thing I have not done yet is to meet these obviously intelligent, articulate people in person. I am hoping to accomplish this very shortly, and after that, I'll probably know for sure. Full retail politics always works best for me.

How very fortunate we are to have such formidable candidates willing to work on behalf of the citizens of this state.

Hope for a return to sanity.

house party (4.00 / 1)
go to Jackie Cilley's web site , click on events and invite yourself to an event near you. One at Governor's Inn in Rochester on 5/10. Then compare after Chaz's event. Or better yet, go to an event when both candidates speak, or for that matter all three. Best way to find out.

I looked at qualifications of both, listened to both speak and decided.

Have looked, (0.00 / 0)
none near me yet at times/dates I could go, but am checking back frequently. I'm sure it will happen soon.

The Pledge (0.00 / 0)
I'll vote for any one of these worthy Dems, but I do find the Pledge issue a little troubling and I wonder if you could weigh in on that in particular, maybe in a future post, Kathy.

I agree with Maggie (4.00 / 1)
I agree with Maggie Hassan's position.  I don't have time to discuss that now, but at some point will do something on why I agree.
