When John Lynch announced that he was not running for a fifth term, I decided not to jump and endorse a candidate immediately. I wanted to wait and see who the strongest Democratic candidate would be by observing the field and listening to the candidates speak before deciding who best represented common sense leadership in the tradition of Jeanne Shaheen and John Lynch, and who would put together the best campaign.
On each of those counts, there is no question that the best Democratic candidate, and a person I know will win in November and go on to be a great governor, is Maggie Hassan. Maggie Hassan is a forward-thinking leader who fights for what matters and delivers for New Hampshire. I'm proud to support her campaign for governor.
Maggie is a solid, impressive candidate. One of her first priorities was reaching out to the grass roots of the party, which is so important to us keeping the corner office in November. She has picked up the support of several key labor organizations, such as the International Union of Painters and Allied Trades Council #35, the Carpenters Local 118, the Iron Workers Local 7, and the United Food and Commercial Workers Locals 1445 and 791.
I have seen Maggie speak before large crowds and small. At each forum, she was articulate, with an excellent command of the issues facing New Hampshire, and able to connect with her audience. Her personal story - as a daughter, wife, mother and lawyer - resonates with every person who has had to balance the responsibilities of family and work.
I also have observed her during her years in the State Senate. She has a strong record of advocating for New Hampshire families on jobs and education so everyone has the opportunity to succeed. As Governor, she will put people first and take New Hampshire forward-by helping to create the best workforce, the best schools and making New Hampshire the leader in innovation by advocating for New Hampshire businesses. Maggie Hassan also will carry on New Hampshire's tradition of common sense leadership.
The likely Republican nominee, Ovide Lamontagne, on the other hand, would be a rubber stamp for an extremist agenda that would roll New Hampshire back decades. Ovide Lamontagne has said he'd be a "radically different" kind of governor than John Lynch. I've also had the chance to observe Ovide over the years. As chairman of the state Board of Education, he did not want to accept federal education dollars. He believes in government interference with women's health care decisions. He wants to end Medicare and put the New Hampshire legislature in charge of doling out health care to the elderly, subjecting our seniors to the uncertain whims of representatives like Bill O'Brien.
New Hampshire can't afford that kind of radical change. We need to elect Maggie Hassan as our next governor.
