It seems that separate-but-equal civil unions in New Jersey aren't so equal. Hundreds of employers, including UPS, are refusing to treat their NJ, civil-unioned employees as married as the NJ law had intended. UPS states that their benefits are governed by federal law, not state law. However, UPS does recognize married MA same sex couples as married. Is it just the word then?
FACT: Our marriage equality is worse than South Africa, land of apartheid.
Civil unions are not marriages, no matter how much I'm told otherwise by my representatives. My partner and I are traveling to Toronto in November to get married for precisely this reason. What's happening to UPS employees is repeating itself in every state where civil unions have been enacted. The problem is that representatives in those states agreed on civil unions with the understanding they would be treated the same as marriage.
Two things have to occur in order for same-sex couples in NH to be treated as equals:
1) Repeal DOMA
2) Pass full equal marriage rights in NH
I'm glad NH at least has civil unions, and I realize this is not top priority for most Americans, by a long shot. But items such as this make a mockery of the U.S. We are supposed to be the shining international beacon for equality and human rights.
