It has been nine days since the Draft Shaheen committee was able to announce that we had met the goal of obtaining 1000 supporters a month ahead of schedule. Since then, the number of supporters has continued to grow: we are closing in on 1,200 New Hampshire supporters of our petition asking former Governor Shaheen to run for the Senate nomination!
When this effort started back in June, I stressed that I wanted this draft movement to be a New Hampshire driven, grass roots effort, so that we could show Governor Shaheen that people wanted her to run. In reading some of the messages sent to our web site, it is apparent that is what Draft Shaheen has become - a vehicle for the grass roots of our party to voice their support for Governor Shaheen, as well as their concerns about the direction of our country.
There are simple statements like "Please Run!" and "You go girl", but there are also lengthy messages mentioning a number of issues. Angela Jones said, "Continue to fight for what is right: health care, our environment, our civil rights and education."
There are people who have included in their messages reminders that they disagreed with Governor Shaheen in the past on one or more issues, but, as Janice from Dover said, "I mention this to indicate how strongly I hope that you will decide to run."
Members of organized labor, like Paul O'Connor, and grass roots activists like Caroline French are signing up. Caroline wrote, "Put me in coach...I am in the grassroots wing of the Draft Shaheen movement.!"
Some talk about the importance of defeating the incumbent, saying things like "John Sununu is a disgrace" and, my personal favorite, "Please run against the idiot we have now". Others take a more serious tone, such as the retired colonel from Newmarket who said, "Because of the total mess Bush and Sununu have made of this country, I urge you to run."
The people who are signing and sending these messages are not party insiders; they are a cross section of New Hampshire people who care a lot about our state and our country, and I am proud that they are supporting Draft Shaheen!
