Fred Thompson will declare his candidacy for the Republican nomination on September 6th.
It seems like an odd day, doesn't it? Originally he was going to announce right after the Fourth of July. Now he waits until after Labor Day - but several days after. And one day after the Republican candidates' debate in Manchester, which - as a non-candidate at that point in time - he will skip.
This is the earliest moment that Thompson can declare and still - by running out the clock on subsequent deadlines - avoid filing campaign finance disclosures until after the first several states have voted. People might be less likely to support him if they knew what groups are funding him.
Is there any other explanation? Well, one: Thompson isn't embarrassed that his money comes from crooks and special interests, he is instead embarrassed that he can't raise much. That's entirely possible.
But I suppose the real question is, can there be an innocent explanation?
I can't see one.
Of course, Thompson could earn an immediate apology from me by simply moving up his announcement.
But I don't think he will. I think he's taking dirty money.
