Young Democrats Event with Jeanne Shaheen and Elizabeth Edwards

by: Kathy Sullivan

Sat Oct 27, 2007 at 09:43:43 AM EDT

The Young Demcorats had a great John and Robert Kennedy event last night in Concord. The special honoree of the evening was Mike Vlacich, former executive director of the NHDP, former campaign manager for John Lynch, former deputy chief of staff for John Lynch, former staffer for Governor Jeanne Shaheen, current director of economic development for the Department of Resources and Economic Development, and all around great guy, who received the first annual C. Arthur Soucy lifetime achievement award.

C. Arthur was the first president of the NH Young D's back in the 1960's, and he has been a mainstay of the party ever since.  Those of us in Manchester are especially fond of C. Arthur!

The other honoree of the evening was Katie Judd, who was named Young Democrat of the Year for all of her work for the organization.  She deservedly received cheers and a standing ovation from the audience. The two featured speakers were Elizabeth Edwards and Jeanne Shaheen.  Elizabeth spoke about how important the efforts of young Democrats are and about the candidacy of her husband John Edwards.  I got to know both of the Edwards back in the last primary cycle, and while I support Hillary Clinton, Elizabeth is an excellent representative for her husband, and I always enjoy seeing her.

Governor Shaheen received what I can only describe as a rousing ovation from the crowd when she was introduced. While most of her remarks were about Mike Vlacich, she also talked about the importance of young Democrats and the need to continue to increase the vote of young Americans. She also mentioned how she originally not been scheduled to attend the event because she was going to be visiting her daughter at college in San Diego this weekend, but had to cancel because of the fires. She tied that into the senate race and the need for change, how climate change and global warming were contributing factors to the fires, and how the environment, health care, the economy and getting out of Iraq were all critical issues in this election.  She was terrific, and I am so very happy that she is running for senate!!!

Nick Clemons, who is one of Mike Vlacich's best friends, and who has worked alongside Mike in NH election since 1996, and who is curently the state director of the Clinton for president campaign, read a letter from former President Bill Clinton honoring Mike.  Mike also received a copy of Letters From Nuremberg signed personally by Chris Dodd.

It was a great event, and I am so impressed by the work that the Young D's are doing!  Kudos to YD chair Gray Chynoweth and event organizer Garth Corriveau for an excellent evening.  I am guessing that with this group in charge, the Young Democrats of America conference in Manchester Nov. 16-18 will be the best ever! It is being held in conjunction with the National Stonewall Democrats and the Eastern Region of the DNC, so we can expect a lot of Democrats from around the country to be descending on NH in just a couple of weeks!

...on men who are all about their hometowns...

"The only thing worse than walking down Main St. in Concord with Mike Vlacich is walking  in Dover with Billy." ~Jeanne Shaheen

The Young Dems are responsible for their National Convention as host, and needed the well deserved support of their party. You came out and proved they have arrived ! It will cost them approximately $5,000. just to host the event, and they are geared up and going to have the best National Convention ever for their organization. Right here, in New Hampshire.

I appreciate your diary on this great event.I was pleased to be asked to serve on the event committee. There's hope for the future with the drive and committement of this group.  We committed back in January to help at the County Committee level, and I am pleased at the opportunity to have Elizabeth address the crowd.

Working with campaign staffers half her age, Elizabeth is an example to all.  She keeps a schedule that would make most men frail. And when she said, "I don't look too bad do I" I have to say she seems to thrive on the sense of purpose she brings to the table.

Next time, there may be no next time.
