68 NH Residents Quit GOP for Obama

by: Sleeping Giant Stirs

Mon Nov 05, 2007 at 19:05:22 PM EST

Below are two releases from the Obama for America movement which clearly demonstrate the broad appeal of Sen. Barack Obama.  The first is dedicated to Obama's NH support, while the second includes NH along with Iowa.

Some of his NH supporters, which are listed below, have personal profiles maintained on the NHHQ Website. You can find them by going here.

Sixty-Eight New Hampshire Republicans Announce their Support for Obama
Granite State Republicans cite Obama's direct answers, track record of forging bipartisan solutions

MANCHESTER, NH-Sixty-eight New Hampshire Republicans announce today that they have changed party registration to vote for Barack Obama in the primary.  Many of these voters have never supported a Democrat before, but they see Obama as the only candidate in either party who has the character to be honest about where he'll take the country, and the only candidate who has a proven record of bringing people together for real change.

"I've been a Republican all my life, but the challenges we face are too great to choose a candidate based on his party-we need to the choose the candidate who can bring fundamental change to Washington and start getting things done again," said Jerry Spivak, an engineer from Nashua.  "Barack Obama is the only candidate who will be able to break the partisan logjam and inspire Americans to come together around real solutions."

"I've always believed that you can only bring about real change when people come together across party lines, and I've seen what happens when folks put politics aside and get down to work," Senator Obama said.  "If you can't bring people together across the old fault lines, you simply aren't going to be able to make progress on the challenges we face."

The following New Hampshire Republicans publicly announced that they had switched parties to vote for Obama:

Over 300 Republicans in Iowa and NH declare support for Obama

By Sam Graham-Felsen - Nov 5th, 2007 at 4:06 pm EST
Today 268 Iowa Republicans announced that they will caucus for Senator Barack Obama and 68 New Hampshire Republicans announced that they had changed their party registration to vote for Barack Obama in the primary, saying he is the only candidate in either party who can break through the gridlock in Washington because he has a proven record of bringing Republicans and Democrats together to solve problems.  In Illinois, Obama bridged the partisan divide to extend health care to 150,000 Illinois families, pass a $100 million tax cut for working families and enact historic ethics reform.

"With all of the challenges our country faces, we cannot elect a President who will go to Washington and just get bogged down by the same partisan gridlock," Brett Blix said. "That's why I'm supporting Senator Obama even though I'm a Republican. He's the only candidate in either party with a record of bringing Republicans and Democrats together to solve problems, and he will always tell you where he stands even when you disagree. There are thousands of disaffected Republicans like me who are disappointed by President Bush and the Republican presidential candidates who would consider voting for a Democrat who can bring about change we can believe in."

Brett Blix is 30-year-old Iraq war veteran from Northwood, Iowa. He recently switched his party registration so that he can caucus for Senator Obama.

"I've been a Republican all my life, but the challenges we face are too great to choose a candidate based on his party-we need to the choose the candidate who can bring fundamental change to Washington and start getting things done again," Jerry Spivak said.  "Barack Obama is the only candidate who will be able to break the partisan logjam and inspire Americans to come together around real solutions."

Jerry Spivak is a 57-year-old engineer from Nashua, New Hampshire.  He recently switched his party registration so that he can vote for Senator Obama in the primary.

This public support from Republicans is yet another sign of Senator Obama's crossover appeal. Previously, Obama received third place in a poll of Republican Iowa caucus goers - receiving more support from Republicans than Mike Huckabee, John McCain and Sam Brownback combined.

"I've always believed that you can only bring about real change when people come together across party lines, and I've seen what happens when folks put politics aside and get down to work," Senator Obama said. "If you can't bring people together across the old fault lines, you simply aren't going to be able to make progress on the challenges we face."

Dean John Hutson Endorses Obama

By Eddie Lee, NH Obama Staff - Oct 30th, 2007 at 1:00 pm EDT

John Hutson, Dean of Franklin Pierce Law Center and former Judge Advocate General of the U.S. Navy, announced his support for Barack Obama today.  Hutson endorsed Obama as best candidate to move the country beyond our failed foreign policy and restore our moral leadership in the world, citing Obama's unifying leadership, his early stand against the war in Iraq, and his belief in strong, personal diplomacy with friend and foe.

Now a resident of Bow, Hutson served as a judge advocate in the United States Navy from 1972-2000.  He has served as President and Dean of Franklin Pierce Law Center since 2000.  Dean Hutson was a registered Republican until changing his party affiliation this month to vote for Obama in the primary.

Mary Morin's Story (0.00 / 0)
Serving Those Who Serve-Mary Morin's Story
By Michael Negron, NH Obama Staff - Sep 14th, 2007 at 1:08 pm EDT

During her 21 years in the U.S. Air Force, Mary Morin's camaraderie with her fellow service members always strongly motivated her. Now as director of the NH State Veterans Council, Mary still spends her days serving her former comrades.

"Every day, I'm reminded of why I do this," she said, "I like knowing that I've helped make a veteran's life just a little better."

The Raymond resident was a Navy brat and traveled extensively as a result of her father's reassignments.  A restless thirst for adventure led her to enlist in the Air Force at age 21.  She became an air maintenance technician and worked on B-52 bombers for 16 years before transitioning to the cutting-edge B-2 bomber.

Along the way, she married an airman and fellow technician, and had 5 children.  Tuition assistance from the Department of Defense and other educational programs helped put her through college, and she left the service to become a teacher.

Her plans changed when a job as a service officer opened up at the State Veterans Council.  She took the position and was promoted to director within a year.  She has been leading the agency as the first veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan return home and transition into the VA system.  Mary loves her job. She feels empowered to be an advocate for veterans at the highest levels of state government.

She also feels empowered by her support of Barack Obama for President.  Working on the campaign enables her to bring her mission of serving her former comrades into the arena of presidential politics.

Mary is a member of the Obama for New Hampshire Veterans Steering Committee.  She believes in Barack because of his honesty and forthrightness.  "He looks you in the eye," she said, "and doesn't make big promises.  He listens, learns about the issue, and then speaks frankly about what can be done."

"He's focused on veterans' issues," she added, "and has demonstrated the work ethic and discipline to study the issue and serve as an advocate for veterans across the country."

"There is ...The United States of America" (0.00 / 0)
"The pundits like to slice-and-dice our country into Red States and Blue States; Red States for Republicans, Blue States for Democrats. But I've got news for them too. We worship an awesome God in the Blue States, and we don't like federal agents poking around in our libraries in the Red States. We coach Little League in the Blue States and yes, we got some gay friends in the Red States. There are patriots who opposed the war in Iraq and patriots who supported the war in Iraq. We are one people, all of us pledging allegiance to the stars and stripes, all of us defending the United States of America."

Obama's Red State Appeal

Friday, Nov. 02, 2007 By JAY NEWTON-SMALL/OMAHA
Political organizing for Democrats in red states like Nebraska can often feel a bit like leading AA meetings. But that hasn't deterred more than 300 Nebraskans from forming a dozen groups for Senator Barack Obama's presidential campaign, and they aren't the only ones. On Monday, the Obama campaign announced that over 300 Iowa and New Hampshire Republicans had decided to cross party lines to support Obama. At Obama events in Oklahoma, Kentucky, Virginia and Georgia, a good 20% of audiences routinely raise their hands when emcees ask for Republicans in the crowd. A "Republicans for Obama" website has 11 state chapters with 146 members. An August University of Iowa even found Obama running third in the state among Republican candidates, behind Mitt Romney and Rudy Giuliani but ahead of both Fred Thompson and John McCain. And a national Gallup poll this month also found that nearly as many Republicans like Obama - 39% - than the 43% that dislike him, compared with the 78% of Republicans who held an unfavorable opinion of Hillary Clinton. -snip-

Even some former Bush supporters and advisers are Obama converts. Three former major fundraisers for the President have given money to Obama. One of them, James Canning, a Chicago financier, is openly supporting Obama after he grew tired of what he calls the GOP's "Neanderthal positions on things like stem cell research and global warming." Mark McKinnon, Bush's chief media consultant during both of his presidential campaigns, has warned his clients - including Senator John McCain - that if Obama wins the Democratic nomination McKinnon won't work against him in the general election. And Matthew Dowd, Bush's former top political strategist, told the New York Times that the only candidate that appeals to him this cycle in either party is Obama. -snip-
