Yard sign wars - Hillary vs Obama

by: newhampster

Sat Dec 22, 2007 at 19:09:24 PM EST

Cross posted from my dKos diary because I'd like some NH opinions. http://www.dailykos.com/storyo...

Dinners have been interesting at our Londonderry home while the competing signs have multiplied.

I've been phoning, canvassing, blogging, , meeting Bill, getting interviewd, and writing letters for Hillary since May.

I've been involved in just about every event and action of the last year.  See my previous diaries for background.

Follow the battle on the flip side.

newhampster :: Yard sign wars - Hillary vs Obama
The Battle in the Trenches - The battle lines have been drawn!

Mrs. NewHampster and I disagree as to who is best suited to lead this country.  We've managed to remain somewhat civil throughout the months but as the primary draws near things are getting downright ugly.

I made my decision on the day the Senator announced she would take up the fight.

Mrs. NH made her decision when Senator Obama announced.  I'm not here to defend or criticize my wife's commitment.  She was a local star of the Dean campaign and has done an admirable job for Obama.

The battle of the signs started slowly.  We had 2 Hillary signs throughout the summer until the late starting Obama people put two out in late fall.

A silly battle yes, but when you are fighting for the hearts and minds of your neighbors yard signs do matter. Just as with canvassing, a yard sign gives local validation to the candidate.

I, the one who mows the lawn, took care to move and replace all 4 signs.  Then when winter and real primary season began, I added one more sign.  She countered with two etc.  I also as the good democrat pulled all the signs out of the ground before last weeks big snow.  I then replaced all, including hers.  When my snowblower covered Obama's name, I actually cleaned it off.

How does she thank me?  She put up two more on both sides of our driveway.

My guess is the neighbors may be laughing and looking hard at Ron Paul.

Breakfast is kind of quiet too.

I'm not here to debate about Hillary vs Obama.

I have a question.  Our kids are grown and we have 3 extra bedrooms and a finished basement.  For months I've asked if a Hillary intern could crash here.  The answer has always been a resounding NO.

Then the other day, after we had a foot of snow, she asked where someone could park their car if a couple were to stay with us during the last week of the primary?  I verified that she meant Obama supporters and volunteered to plow out our side parking space for Hillary people.

Dinner was not pleasant that night.  She has not asked again.

Being that I am a pragmatic Hillary supporter, today I offered a compromise.  I offered to plow out the space if we could have interns/volunteers from both camps.  I think it would be fun as we're all eventually on the same team.

She of course said no.

I'm sure dinner will be quiet again tonight.

Why this question in the first place?  All the campaigns have volunteers and interns coming to NH for the last week.  It sometimes boggles the mind but people will travel cross country to help out and play a part in this epicenter of politics.

Poll
Should we take in volunteers from both camps?
No. Give in to the woman
Hell NO. You run the plow so get the Hillary kids
Yes. working together is always the best
Be lonely and have none
Say screw it and offer the beds to Kucinich intern

I have one ironclad prediction (4.00 / 1)
She has the "Mrs." honorific. Therefore whatever you do will be wrong. ;-)

From the Mrs. Point-of-View (4.00 / 1)
Are we really that bad? Uncompromising? Unrelenting? Does the wife always have to be right???

Let me guess, if she is so unwilling to compromise on this... as a fellow woman who is supporting Obama (although my spouse is politically apathetic--- but will vote for the Dem in the general), I have to just guess that her principles lead her to believe so strongly in her candidate that she cannot risk doing ANYTHING that might help an opponent.

I say, house a Kuccinich supporter.

Feeling hopeful since 2004...

37 years of marriage recommend that you each get one sign -- both planted to the left of driveway -- and no volunteers staying in the house.

Although you both might be able to handle volunteers for different campaigns, it's unlikely that some 18 or 19--year-old kids would find it easy to handle.

Next time, try to agree!

we started with just two signs each (0.00 / 0)
but we've had fun with it too and it's gotten silly.

I'd like to take in a retired couple or two who are here to work for their candidate, whoever that may be as long as she's a dem.

My wife just said I've gone over the deep end (0.00 / 0)
I'm too much into the campaign, volunteer too many hours, blog too much and send foolish ideas to campaign officials.

Yep. It's all true because I've never been so certain that this is the most important primary of my life and New Hampshire must send Hillary off with a strong vote of confidence.

I just spent the afternoon making calls and chatting with Ann Lewis, NH Speaker Terri Norelli and other strong women from Hillary's campaign.  We were at the Salem regional office.

What awesome messengers they are.  Strong women, successful women, women who have already changed history.  Without mentioning it or selling it, they un-questionably raise the need to have a woman in charge.

You want change?  When we send a woman campaigning for the White House we will be offering the biggest change in 230 years.  Don't think the dream of that won't bring out support like we've never seen for a Democrat.

My gift to you and the enlightened Mrs. NewHampster (0.00 / 0)
Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama musically argue it out over who is the better
candidate in this song satirizing "Anything You Can Do I Can Do Better."
