Concord Monitor to Endorse Clinton

by: newhampster

Sat Dec 29, 2007 at 18:23:18 PM EST

(Slightly reformatted before promotion - promoted by Laura Clawson)

Tomorrow's editorial will endorse Hillary Clinton in New Hampshire's Democratic primary. Here is an excerpt:

Clinton's ambitious to-do list for her first few weeks in office gives us confidence that her priorities are right and that she would act swiftly to make a positive difference. She is the Monitor's choice in the Jan. 8 Democratic primary.

New Hampshire Democrats and independents are blessed with a strong field of presidential candidates at a time when a change of course is desperately needed. We have been impressed by Joe Biden's pragmatic foreign policy and by John Edwards's insistence that we pay attention to the poorest Americans.

Barack Obama, more than most, has the power to inspire. The positive tone of his campaign is not a gimmick. He is a serious candidate with sober ideas. For reasons symbolic and substantive, he would also be a nominee Democrats could feel proud to vote for.

But Hillary Clinton's unique combination of smarts, experience and toughness makes her the best choice to win the November election and truly get things done.

Update.  The full endorsement is here: Clinton Endorsement

Excellent! (4.00 / 1)
Thanks for the good news, Hampster.  As a Hillary supporter in another state, I'm counting on you guys to bring it home!

I've updated the endorsement "Archive" post (4.00 / 2)
It has all the papers and links to the endorsements themselves.

2008 Endorsement Diary

Let's hope that it will be 2016 before we are interested in which newspapers endorsed which Democrat, and that BH is still as vibrant and active!

Updated with links (0.00 / 0)
and Nash Telegraph has endorsed McCain today

So... is the UL the only Paper that does not do an "official" Dem Endorsement? I know they wrote a favorable Obama piece but does it count as "endorsement'?.

That is the only missing link from the archive diary.

What a disappointment (4.00 / 2)
The Concord Monitor editorial board also endorsed John Kerry in 2004 ... and we all know how well that worked out.

Frustrating... (4.00 / 1)
I can't detect a pattern yet in the way newspapers have been endorsing.  If it was like Clinton/Romney... Obama/McCain then maybe there'd be something to that, but with all the papers going for McCain it's incoherent.

It's time we steer by the stars, and not the lights of every passing ship

"McCain" in newspaper lingo is shorthand for (4.00 / 4)
"we know the GOP field sucks, so I'll throw Bob Dole '96 a bone."

Yeah, I would agree with that ... (4.00 / 1)
Or also, "We don't want Mitt Romney or Mike Huckabee to be the nominees, because we think they actually might win ..."

I have to say... (4.00 / 2)
that, after this summer, I'm not at all surprised that the Monitor chose to endorse Senator Clinton. I may have to subscribe just so I can cancel it in protest.

Great News! (4.00 / 1)
The Monitor, in my opinion, nailed it by focusing on her smarts, experience and toughness.  It is a good field, but Hillary is the best candidate to be president.

Energy and persistence conquer all things.

Follow the money... (4.00 / 2)
Hillary Clinton for President - http://query.nictusa.com/cgi-b...

Friends of Hillary - http://query.nictusa.com/cgi-b...

Senator Clinton has accepted money from three of the entities that attempted to illegally foreclose on my home - PMI, Merrill and LaSalle. PMI used to own Fairbanks Capital Corp., n/k/a Select Portfolio Servicing who is also named in my litigation. PMI sold Fairbanks/SPS to Credit Suisse First Boston in 2005. And yet, Sen. Clinton wants to talk about the "foreclosure crisis". But this isn't just about me.

Sen. Clinton has gone as far as promoting indemnification from legal action for mortgage servicers who make modifications to loans. Servicers are already empowered to make modifications without the Senator's assistance. I'm only one of more than 280,000 FTC-certified VICTIMS of Fairbanks/SPS as certified in USA/Curry v. Fairbanks in 2004.

How many hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of people across the country have lost their homes to ILLEGAL foreclosures initiated by the mortgage servicers whom Sen. Clinton now wants to protect?

The contributions from the National Association of Real Estate Investment Trusts Inc. PAC ALONE makes me question where her ambition truly lies. Then I have to look at Lehman Bros., the American Stock Exchange Fed PAC, Ameriprise PAC, Cash America Int'l PAC, CitiGroup PACs, BofA Corp PACs,Citizen's Financial PAC, Deloitte & Touche Federal PAC, E-Trade Financial PAC, Ernst & Young PAC, Freddie PAC, Fannie Mae PAC, GE PAC, Goldman Sachs Group Inc. PAC, HSBC North America PAC, Int'l Securuties Exchange PAC, JP Morgan Chase PAC, KPMG Partners/Principles & Employees PAC, Morgan Stanley PAC, Mortgage Bankers Association PAC, NASDAQ Stock Market PAC, Nat'l Association of Federal Credit Unions PAC, Nat'l Ass. of Insurance and Financial Advisors PAC, Nat'l Assn. of Realtors PAC, New Century Financial Corp. PAC, NY Bankers Ass'n PAC, Nixon Peabody LLC PAC, NYSE Group Inc PAC, O'Melveny & Myers PAC, Oppenheimer Funds PAC, Prudential Financial Inc. PAC, Real Estate Roundtable PAC, Securities Industry and Financial Markets Ass'n Fund, Skadden Arps PAC, Wal-Mart Stores Inc PAC, Washington Mutual PAC.

While some of these may be older contributions, the money trail simply speaks volumes to me. And these are just the names that I recognize without having to research...
