Mail Call Week ending Dec 29: 527 Uprising

by: Mike Hoefer

Sun Dec 30, 2007 at 12:17:20 PM EST

( - promoted by Dean Barker)

As one would expect, the volume of mail picked up this week. Obama 3, Clinton 2 (Via Emily's List and Women Vote), Edwards 1 (via Alliance for A New America) Not sure how to score the controversial AFSCME People piece that mentions Edwards but is really from a Clinton endorsed 527.

Some comments after the jump.

Mike Hoefer :: Mail Call Week ending Dec 29: 527 Uprising
Three Pieces this week from Obama.
  1. GOTV focus and "Change we can Believe In"- Includes instruction for Undeclared voters and if not registered. Good move. He is obviously is counting on the U's and New Voters. Yesterday I heard that a logger I know plans on voting for Obama. If Obama can appeal to him it is a good sign for the campaign.
  2. Education- "Responsibility for our children's education starts at home with parents" Again I think this language may appeal to some of the more conservative folks in NH. It's not just the "States" responsibility but the Parents too. His bullet points include
    • Recruit an army of New Teachers
    • Raise Teacher Salaries
    • Revamp 'No Child Left Behind.'
    • Make Science and Math Education a National Priority
  3. Combo Piece on Health Care and Alternative Energy.. Blames corporate lobbyists.

All pieces paid for by the campaign, and addressed to spouse and myself. Stikes me how much this man talks with his hands! It is contrasted by some of the 527 Clinton photos which are often clasped.

527's on the move
Let's start with the controversial AFSCME PEOPLE piece

Much has been written on this piece already. It's been known around here as the "Bank Shot" as it quotes Edwards and attacks Obama. The piece itself is paid for by a 527 that has endorsed Clinton.  Among high info voters this piece has a backfire potential on Clinton. It essentially an attack type piece likely pissing of both Edwards, and Obama Supporters. Among low info voters in backfires at it promotes Edwards. A bad piece all around. I look forward to the 15Million Question at the Dem Debate next Saturday.

New Hampshire Women Vote
Two pieces this week from "New Hampshire Women Vote" a Project of EMILY's List. Not surprisingly these were addressed to my somewhat apolitical spouse (as was the ASFCME piece). Interesting that this week the Clinton campaign as called 2-3 times looking for her "ID". I had half a mind just to joke with them a bit and say "She'll vote for who ever I tell her to" but I refrained... (for the record she says she is between Obama and Edwards). Hanna talked about these pieces earlier this week, and some conversation started up there. Here are a couple of pics.

Alliance for a New America
The final piece of the week is the second mailing from "Alliance for a New America" in support of John Edwards.

The piece outlines Edwards Foreign Policy Plan

  • End the war in Iraq
  • Reengage with the world
  • A new plan for Africa
  • Fight global poverty
  • Work with other nations for peace in the Middle East

I was thinking about the photographs in all these 527 pieces... I assume that if the "No Coordination" rule is true they can not use any "Campaign Owned" photographs and have to deal directly with photographers. Does anybody know how this works?

One more week left, I'm sure it will be the biggest mail week thus far.

Another Alliance for a New America (0.00 / 0)
Yesterday's mail brought only one flier--another from the  Alliance for a New America.

Like the one that came the day before, the outside looks to be generic while the inside is devoted to Edwards.

NEW HAMPSHIRE FAMILIES ARE LOSING OUT BECAUSE SPECIAL INTEREST MONEY CONTROLS WASHINGTON--front

Ask all the candidates what their plans are to stop the special interest money that controls Washington politicians--back.

It will be interesting how much traction antagonism towards an amorphous "special interest money" has.  Blaming a third party has got to get stale some time.

The inside verbiage doesn't strike me as convincing.  But that may just be me.

John Edwards has a plan to defeat the big corporations that have hijacked our government so they get richer at the expense of our families

This sentence does not compute.  The elements of the plan:

*Ban all candidates from taking lobbyist money

*Create a constitutional line-item veto so the President can veto wasteful pork spending put into bills at the request of lobbyists

*Ban top officials from lobbying their colleagues for five years after they serve

JOHN EDWARDS' PLAN TO HELP MIDDLE-CLASS FAMILIES;--center (not worth analysis)

None of these are promises that a President can keep, since they're not up to him.  This is a legislative agenda by someone who ought to be aiming to officiate.
When you don't identify the responsible party accurately, you're not going to get anything done.

I think there is some sort of (0.00 / 0)
inverse law of attention... Presidential elections get all the attention but in many ways Senate and House choices are more important.

With all this attention they have to promise something even if it's not part of the job description.

Hope > Fear

Clinton using language of AFSCME (4.00 / 2)
While watching a "highlight" of the closing stump speeches in Iowa, Hillary is using the "bandaid" metaphor used by the AFSCME in their anti-Obama mailer to describe Obama's policy.

Funny, she doesn't support this mailing or their action on her behalf, yet she's adopted their language.

Things that make you go hmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

Feeling hopeful since 2004...now "Secretary" of the New Boston Democratic Caucus

Or the language comes down from her campaign strategists (0.00 / 0)
as talking points, so that's how the term gets used by both.

Good catch.
