Edwards to Endorse Soon?

by: Jennifer Daler

Sun Feb 10, 2008 at 20:20:12 PM EST

Here is a tidbit from CNN:
Edwards
met with Hillary and will meet with Obama tomorrow.

This is the most interesting to me:

Two friends close to Elizabeth Edwards say she has been in support of Barack Obama, whose campaign has been touting a list of endorsements from former Edwards backers.

yeah (0.00 / 0)
I read that article and thought "way to bury the lead!" If Elizabeth is really pushing for it, then I'd bet it's only a matter of time.

Go 'Bama!

Her endorsement is the one I'm more interested in. (4.00 / 2)

Edwards flatly denies she favors Obama (0.00 / 0)
UPDATE: In response to such reports, Elizabeth Edwards flatly denies she favors Obama, saying she has "not even come close" to suggesting anything like that to any friend. Edwards adds that she has "no idea" why friends of hers would say that because it simply isn't so.-From CNN

Must admit, I'm bummed to read this.

Whack-a-mole, anyone?

I (0.00 / 0)
would be surprised if he endorsed before Ohio and Texas.

do you think it is worth anything at this point? (0.00 / 0)
I think his moment was before Super Tuesday... the longer he waits the less valuable it becomes.

If the Clintons get one more victory in the month of February (she might get Maryland), it'll be lucky for them.

Everything is worth anything. (0.00 / 0)
Remember when "some people" said that Obama didn't need his vote?  Remember how that turned out?  Every vote helps, and every endorsement helps.  Valuable or not...

Obama to fly to NC to meet Edwards tonight (4.00 / 1)
 http://www.nytimes.com/2008/02...
At the same time, the Clinton camp confirmed that Mrs. Clinton had met privately on Thursday with former Senator John Edwards in North Carolina. Mr. Edwards, who has dropped out of the race, has not made an endorsement. But Mr. Obama is scheduled to meet with him too, on Monday night, Obama allies say, and is also flying to Mr. Edwards's home in North Carolina.

The fact that both candidates are taking time out of their campaign schedule to meet with Mr. Edwards is a measure of their competitiveness for his support as the race comes down to a state-by-state battle for delegates and, as important, momentum.

or simply release?

I thought I heard (0.00 / 0)
on CNN saying new DNC rules say if you are out of the race your delegates can now vote for whoever they want to.

[ Parent ]
The rules (4.00 / 2)
The rules let delegates vote for whom they want, but, given that delegates are typically very loyal to their candidate, they would tend to take the former candidate's wished to heart.

Also, technically a "pledged" delegate does not have to vote for the person they are pledged to.

In 2004, there was this fellow who came to the convention with one of the NH delegates; the fellow was a writer, and he had been advocating for an open convention - i.e., he wanted John Kerry to release his delegates because the guy was convinced that if Kerry did that, there would be a huge movement to nominate Howard Dean. I don't think he ever figured out that the reason these people were Kerry delegates was because they had worked really, really hard to get John Kerry the nomination.

He suspended his campaign (4.00 / 1)
So he can hold onto his delegates. They say he has 26 but with super delegates, he had more than 60. With the race as tight as it is, Edwards could be a factor.

Exactly, they go where they see fit (0.00 / 0)
I have heard of several officeholders who had endorsed Edwards and now endorse Obama -- Rep. Grijalva of Arizona, Rep. Obey of Wisconsin, and others.  There are probably Edwards endorsers who have moved to Clinton but I have not heard of any in particular.

The current Lt. Governor of New Mexico had originally endorsed (and campaigned for) her two-time running mate, current New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson.  When Richardson dropped out, Denish endorsed Hillary.

Obama, Edwards meeting rescheduled
Posted: 01:15 PM ET
(CNN) - An expected meeting between Barack Obama and John Edwards Monday has been rescheduled due to scheduling conflicts, the Obama campaign confirms.

The two men were to discuss John Edwards' likely upcoming endorsement of either Obama or Hillary Clinton.

Clinton met with the former presidential candidate last Thursday. On Saturday night Edwards huddled with several longtime advisers to discuss many issues, including which candidate he should endorse.

The Obama campaign did not give any sense of when the meeting may now take place.
