Gary Hart "Beaking the Final Rule"

by: JonnyBBad

Sun Mar 09, 2008 at 23:04:49 PM EDT

Gary Hart lays into Sen. Clinton for her damaging remarks regarding who is more capable of dealing with a crisis in the White House, John McCain or her, wherein she decides the two of them are of equal stature, but Barack Obama doesn't measure up to the task. It is tough talk, and speaks for itself.

Breaking the Final Rule
   By Gary Hart
   The Huffington Post

   Friday 07 March 2008

It will come as a surprise to many people that there are rules in politics. Most of those rules are unwritten and are based on common understandings, acceptable practices, and the best interest of the political party a candidate seeks to lead. One of those rules is this: Do not provide ammunition to the opposition party that can be used to destroy your party's nominee. This is a hyper-truth where the presidential contest is concerned.

By saying that only she and John McCain are qualified to lead the country, particularly in times of crisis, Hillary Clinton has broken that rule, severely damaged the Democratic candidate who may well be the party's nominee, and, perhaps most ominously, revealed the unlimited lengths to which she will go to achieve power. She has essentially said that the Democratic party deserves to lose unless it nominates her.

As a veteran of red telephone ads and "where's the beef" cleverness, I am keenly aware that sharp elbows get thrown by those trailing in the fourth quarter (and sometimes even earlier). "Politics ain't beanbag," is the old slogan. But that does not mean that it must also be rule-or-ruin, me-first-and-only-me, my way or the highway. That is not politics. That is raw, unrestrained ambition for power that cannot accept the will of the voters.

Senator Obama is right to say the issue is judgment not years in Washington. If Mrs. Clinton loses the nomination, her failure will be traced to the date she voted to empower George W. Bush to invade Iraq. That is not the kind of judgment, or wisdom, required by the leader answering the phone in the night. For her now to claim that Senator Obama is not qualified to answer the crisis phone is the height of irony if not chutzpah, and calls into question whether her primary loyalty is to the Democratic party and the nation or to her own ambition.

Sen. Hart answers his own question, Sen. Clinton's ambitions know no bounds.

True Colors (0.00 / 0)
I began to gain some respect for Hillary Clinton after her win  in NH.  Unfortunately, her campaign tactics since Super Tuesday have once again proven what I feared to be true throughout this process.  I am not a huge fan of Barack Obama, but the class and decency that he has shown demonstrates a maturity required to sit behind the desk in the Oval Office.

"He who loves correction, loves knowledge.  He who hates reproof is stupid." - Proverbs 12:1

My respect for Hillary (4.00 / 1)
As a dyed in the wool Obama supporter (I still have my big "O" from the 100 Club Dinner in my car window, likely obscurring my site, but if I could make them in to a window shade, I would...) there are  moments when I feel very pulled towards Hillary.  There are speeches she makes that I find riveting and compelling, like when she was in Ohio and talked about the pregnant mother getting denied care because she didn't have the $100 upfront cost/deposit to make and ended up delivering a distressed baby who died shortly after birth and the mother died of complications.  It is unthinkable to me that women die in childbirth in the United States, and I feel so proud of her for bringing this up...  She is very smart, has great ideas, and imho would make a good president... however, her politicking does not match her stump rhetoric or her reasons for running... and that is what leaves that bad taste in the back of my throat.

She vascillates from being the candidate that Jim Spillane wants her to be and being the candidate that Gary Hart describes above.

The first red phone ad was made by the Mondale campaign. Fair or unfair, at least it made sense at the time. (4.00 / 1)
The "red phone" was the direct line from the White House to the Kremlin that was established after the Cuban Missile Crisis.  If Hillary Clinton wants to pick up the red phone like the Cold War is still going on, I'm all for letting her sit in the fake Oval at the Reagan Library.

Jon Stewart had the best insight on it, though: whoever ends up in the White House had better answer that 3am call before the sixth ring.

do they have any idea what time it is? Bill you get it, tell them I'm not here"

I would love to have my own Red Phone, with caller ID, three-way calling, and voicemail. Verizon get on that.. you can market it to the Dr. Strangelove fan club.

And knowing Verizon, it'll come with an army too! (0.00 / 0)
Well, an army of TV commercial extras behind the can you hear me now guy, but still!
