Gov. Dean on the 50 State Strategy

by: Ed Tracey

Sat May 17, 2008 at 10:20:11 AM EDT

In advance of Howard Dean's address at the New Hampshire Democratic State Convention in Manchester, he spoke to the Valley News about the 50 State Strategy.
Ed Tracey :: Gov. Dean on the 50 State Strategy
In Mississippi, where Travis Childers won this week's special election, "the state Democratic Party went from a staff of one to a staff of five since Dean took office".

More items:

"Grafton County Democratic Chairman John Chamberlin said Dean deserves credit for party-building efforts, including expanding staff in the Granite State. 'Certainly he's been committed to helping the Democratic Party in New Hampshire, and he put his money where his mouth is.'"

But .....not everyone is happy:

"Fergus Cullen maintained that Dean's 'failed presidential campaign sparked the left-wing's ascendance in New Hampshire Democratic politics'.

Errr...your point, Fergie?

Fergus (4.00 / 1)
has been pushing the "crrraaaaaazzzzzyyyy Howard" meme all day today, huh?

I guess when you've got nothing, you got nothing to lose.

that's amusing (4.00 / 2)
especially when you consider that GOP candidate John Stephen invokes the name of Meldrim Thomson at every opportunity. Mel...now HE was craaaaaaaaaaaaaaazy.

Fergus speaks for me! (4.00 / 3)
"Fergus Cullen maintained that Dean's 'failed presidential campaign sparked the left-wing's ascendance in New Hampshire Democratic politics'.

I've gotta say, I stand with Fergus on this one.  But he left out the other half of the story -- he should have added, "Bush's successful presidential campaign sparked the right-wing's implosion in New Hampshire Democratic politics."

My introduction of Dean (4.00 / 1)
Nobody knew three and a half years ago the dramatic effect that Howard Dean would have
when he took over the Democratic National Committee. Each new chairman always comes in with high hopes and grand plans that somehow always seem to be soon forgotten. But not this time Governor Dean has revolutionized how our party operates from the DC headquarters to every home in America. In 2006, Democrats across America and here in New Hampshire benefited from his 50 state strategy - growing the Democratic party in every  town, in every corner, in ever state in the nation - not giving up one  inch of ground to the Republicans! 2006 proved the brilliance of the fifty state strategy.
A few minutes ago you heard the second part - the neighborhood leader program. All across the nation Democrats that have been ignored in the past for living in state considered too red or ignored for being too blue are engaged in this election. Every state, every town, every neighborhood will be alive with Democratic activity not only because of the vision of Howard Dean but because of skill to make it happen. On the evening of November 4, 2008 Democrats we are going to celebrate. We are going to celebrate like never before!NH Democrats, get on your feet and welcome the chairman of the Democratic national committee - Governor Howard Dean!

Have you written a letter to the editor today? Have you donated today? Have you put up signs? Have you made calls? Have you talked to your neighbors?

Go Gov. Dean! (4.00 / 1)
The Republicans like to rant that Dean is a crazy elitist liberal or that he is a loose canon, but it is quite obvious that his efforts to reshape the Democratic party as a national party and to build a 50 state strategy has had so many overwhelming successes just in the past midterm and special election cycles.  If we are able to pull off a massive Novemeber sweep- picking up a dozen or more House seats, getting at least five or six seats in the Senate and winning the White House- Dean's time as chairman will be looked back upon as having been one the most successful in DNC history.

It was like a split-screen TV shot ..... (4.00 / 1)
....after Dean won the chairmanship, the pundit class (and not just the obvious wingnuts and Planet Starboard members) proclaimed it the worst decision of all time, that Dean would steer the ship right over-the-edge of the waterfall. And that was just his philosophy - his public speeches would be of a mad dog foaming-at-the-mouth variety. An ugly sight.

But on the other screen: state chairmen from red and purple states - who spoke to Dean in private - came away raving about him, saying that they'd never been treated so well by the national headquarters, that he gave them reason for hope. So which side would win?

Looks like the results are just trickling in...

"We should pay attention to that man behind the curtain."

I remember the media narrative (4.00 / 1)
was starkly negative Dean in the beginning. He was the proverbial red headed step child.

Things are looking hopeful.

Fergus clearly hasn't thought this through. (4.00 / 2)
Dean, as Chair of the DNC, is not an ideological guide, but a strategic one.  Obviously, as far as Fergus is concerned, challenging Republicans in elections is a radical left-wing concept.
