603 Forward

by: Garth Corriveau

Tue Jul 01, 2008 at 13:53:12 PM EDT

( - promoted by Dean Barker)

Yesterday, on behalf of the N.H. Young Democrats, I had the privilege to officially unveil "603 Forward." "603 Forward" is the NHYD campaign to elect 31 Young Democratic candidates for state rep in 2008, including Blue Hampshire's own Doug Lindner, Sean Doyle and Andy Sylvia.

The NHYDs have committed to promoting and supporting these candidates this fall politically and financially. We're online, working together, at www.NHYOUNGDEMOCRATS.ORG  and the social networking sites. We're already raising money on the "603 Forward" Act Blue page, with 100% of all contributions going to NHYD state rep candidates.

Not only are we active with the netroots though, we're active with the grassroots. NHYD's statewide canvassing efforts will encourage NH's young adults to vote all the way down the ballot, especially for our young state rep candidates. Young voters have a choice in November - not just between left and right, Democrat and Republican, but between the past and the future. The 31 candidates below represent the future.

Something is happening in New Hampshire. As the Republican party looks backward, with the same old candidates talking about the same old failed policies, New Hampshire's young voters, who accounted for over 16 percent of the vote in January's presidential primary, are looking forward. That's why we named our campaign "603 Forward."

NH's Young Democrats are organized, united and ready for change because no generation has more at stake in this election than today's young adults. NHYD is committed to bringing fresh, new, progressive perspectives and judgment to Concord in 2009, focusing on local issues and the significant, unique challenges facing New Hampshire's young adult population.

The change generating such enthusiasm with NH's young adults - change that grows our economy, provides healthcare for all and cleans our environment, change that doesn't divide us but rather unites us - that change starts with electing Young Democrats to office this November. I know they will appreciate Blue Hampshire's support. Thanks Hamsters!

"New Hampshire is our past and our future; it's where we're from, it's where we'll stay. We will pay the bills, we will face the consequences." (0.00 / 0)
My statement yesterday:

I'm Doug Lindner, the Chair of the Young Candidate Caucus, and I'm running for State Rep in Manchester, Ward 1. I'm running for the same reasons so many of my fellow young candidates are: New Hampshire is our past and our future; it's where we're from, it's where we'll stay. We will pay the bills, we will face the consequences.

Our youth is not an obstacle to service; it is an asset. We are young candidates, but seasoned activists.  Moreover, we have a perspective that a legislature of exclusively older people will never have. We are current and recent students who understand what it means to attend a failing school. We are young enough to have a personal stake in what happens farther down the road; not just through unborn children and grandchildren, we ourselves will see the climate crisis play out. We ourselves will have to deal with the reality that wages have not kept up with the rise in the price of housing, of healthcare, of energy, of higher education, of living in this country, as the jobs our parents and grandparents relied on disappear. And of course, it's our friends and our peers who are coming home from their second, third, fourth tours in Iraq and Afghanistan and not being taken care of.

We have the perspective to see these things coming, to feel it, not just for "the next generation", but because we are the next generation. Moreover, these candidates represent a new generation of leadership for our state, with fresh ideas and strengthened resolve, and a personal commitment to moving New Hampshire forward.

Well Said, Doug (4.00 / 2)
The Young Dems this year are far superior than what we've had in any other year, and all of these candidates are good proof.

Both Garth, Doug and Kristen Mueller deserve alot of credit.

P.S -- One addition, Jacob Weisberg from Hillsborough 19 is 27 years old.

Thanks Andy (4.00 / 1)
I appreciate it, but it's not about getting or deserving credit or debating NHYD's past, it's about electing you and the other 30 YDs running :)

That being said, you, me, Doug, Kristin, Jess, Evan, Wily, Dina, Dave, Jeff, Sean, Roberto ... wow, I could go on & on ... we've built a nifty little political operation this year. We have a lot of work ahead of us, but we're organized and united in '08, so I like our odds!

BTW, h/t to Dean - a big supporter from Day One of our efforts. Progress means an active netroots in '08 and BH walks the walk.

Congratulations! (4.00 / 3)
This is a great achievement! And lets not forget Ben Clemons running for register of deeds in Hillsborough County; he has a primary opponent who is a DINO (endorsed Frank Guinta for mayor), so Ben needs all the support he can get from Hillsborough County Democrats!!

"When you get to the end of your rope, tie a knot and hang on."  Franklin D. Roosevelt

AND Chris Pappas! (4.00 / 1)
Chris just turned 28, he is running for reelection as the Treasurer of Hillsborough County, previously he served two terms in the NH House (Ways and Means and Finance). He is co-owner of the family business - the Puritan Backroom Restaurant. He is the Manchester City chair and just finished up as the Hillsborough County Chair.

Chris' opponent is a NH Young Republican activist.

2012 starts today.

oy vey (0.00 / 0)
I appreciate the plugs, but now people are emailing me about why NHYD isn't supporting Ben & Chris (I was also asked about this issue at the press conference).

So - just to clarify - it's not that NHYD isn't supporting Ben and Chris. They just aren't part of "603 Forward" b/c unfortunately Ben is not registered with us as a NH Young Democrat and is in a contested primary, so we're forbidden by both our charter and our bylaws to help him.

Once that became clear, we made the decision to stay out of the county races and to give 100% of our focus to the other 31 NHYD candidates for state rep in 2008.

Again - we have 31 candidates running! That's amazing, but they need our help and that was the point of my post.

We don't intend to slight anyone. We're rich in enthusiasm, but not in money. NHYD is a labor of love (emphasis on labor) and we're doing our best to help elect Democrats.

Thanks.

vatever dat means (4.00 / 1)
I tried but failed to find the ur New Yorker cartoon, pre-Seinfeld, that depicts a suburban CT cocktail party of the early 60's, when CT was still deeply "restricted". In my town Jews could only own houses in one neighborhood, the rest were off limits and so were most of the golf clubs, swimming clubs etc. Things were changing after the war, the great equalizer in which everybody enlisted. It was still new to have Jews at a party in Fairfield County...this is the backdrop... when a suave and svelte woman is heard to say, "Oy vey, vatever dat means". A funny commnetary on assimilation, when she realized that she had self identified, come out or whatever. Now you all are in on the joke.

"oy vey ist mir" is Yiddish,
Yid·dish  (ydsh)
n.
The language historically of Ashkenazic Jews of Central and Eastern Europe, resulting from a fusion of elements derived principally from medieval German dialects and secondarily from Hebrew and Aramaic, various Slavic languages, and Old French and Old Italian.
[Yiddish yidish, Jewish, Yiddish, from Middle High German jüdisch, Jewish, from jude, jüde, Jew, from Old High German judo, from Latin Idaeus; see Jew.]

..translates to "oh woe is me"
Garth you have an abundance of riches, we are Dems, someone is always unhappy. Oy.

Some of your House candidates (0.00 / 0)
are also in contested primaries.

Say what you need to say (0.00 / 0)
I'm well aware of that Raymond and I'm not to get into this anymore with you online b/c I've known and respected you for nearly a decade.

When the Party Chairman chooses to focus on what NHYD is NOT doing rather than supporting the hard work we ARE doing, it leads to accusatory emails and is potentially bad for morale, so forgive me for defending our board and our 31 "603 Forward" candidates, and forgive me for being proud to work with them.

Before this gets out of hand (0.00 / 0)
The NHYD is committed to supporting ALL young Democrats who run for office. 603 Forward is a specific program to help specific candidates. Of course we will do what we can with our very limited resources to support other young Democrats running for office across the state.

I'm Ray's respect for and support of 603 Forward and the 31 young Rep. candidates is equal to his enthusiasm for great candidates like Ben and Chris.

This is so amazing (4.00 / 2)
Great to see so many familiar names and a lot of kids who I'm sure are just as green and principled as many of the new Dems we elected to the State House in 2006, hopefully even moreso!

Also good to see some women running -- it was very discouraging to look around in Concord as see a lack of gender balance in our age group.

I'm kinda jealous in some ways - gonna miss all the fun next session - but in other ways very set at ease.

Good luck!

It's time we steer by the stars, and not the lights of every passing ship
