Open Thread: Media Narrative vs. Reality Edition

by: Dean Barker

Thu Jul 03, 2008 at 07:27:37 AM EDT

Is anyone else getting the impression that Obama v. McCain is getting lopsided? (And no, that doesn't mean you should relax one inch from your GOTV efforts.)  The short attention span world of 24/7 cable news has been fed two close POTUS cycles in a row, but really, stepping back for a minute, at least at this snapshot in time, both in polls and in campaign operations, there are big, relatively unchanging differences, and we're in July already.  Maybe now that McCain is bringing on the Spawn of Rove that will change?

This is an Open Thread.

These polls don't mean much, and the nasty stuff is only beginning. Or, to quote a source of great wisdom, Caddy Shack, "I'd keep playing. I don't think the heavy stuff's gonna come down for quite some time now..."

has just changed 27 House ratings.

26 of them are in our favor - that's just insane, I can't remember a bigger switch all at once, and in the middle of summer, than what I remember from 2006:

FL-08    Ric Keller    Likely Republican to Lean Republican

If winning is objective #1, winning big is a close second. (4.00 / 3)
A big win means more political capital, greater coattails for the down-ticket races, and less willingness among weaker Republicans in Congress to oppose President Obama's agenda.

Electing Obama is a means to an end, and every percentage point, every state (particularly New Hampshire, which the media will think is a BIG DEAL for McCain to lose) helps accomplish our goals, even after we've gotten our 270 EVs.

Winning is good.  Winning AND winning New Hampshire is better.  Winning 40 states and getting 60% in New Hampshire is better yet.  Aim high.
