16 Weeks and Counting- Veep Edition Open Thread

by: Mike Hoefer

Tue Jul 15, 2008 at 19:33:14 PM EDT

Just 16 weeks to the General Election! When will we hear about the Veep picks? Who will announce first?

Prognosticate about this, or other items of community interest (such as songs that should never be used in a campaign) in this open thread.

(Oh, and let us know what you think of the "Hot Tags" over there --> in the right hand column).

A good idea, but I think it'd be better between ActBlue and The Roll.

On the subject of Veep picks, though, I predict that neither Hillary nor Romney will get the nod.  As for most likelies, I would say McCain-Crist and would have said Obama-Webb until he ruled himself out, so now I'm not sure about that one.  A lot of people are pushing Biden, but he doesn't seem to want it either.

Edwards in the mix n/t (0.00 / 0)

This is not a novel to be tossed aside lightly. It should be thrown with great force.

He ruled himself out months ago and hasn't been "campaigning" for it. (0.00 / 0)

isn't seeking (4.00 / 1)
he would not rule it out...

Still, Edwards told moderator George Stephanopoulos on ABC's "This Week" that he was not seeking the no. 2 slot on the ticket.

"Well, I'd take anything he asked me to think about seriously, but obviously this is something I've done and it's not a job that I'm seeking."Edwards said.

not seeking is very different than not accepting

Edwards is actually on board now (4.00 / 1)
John Edwards, who had said he didn't want to run for vice president again, now seems to be softening that stance.

"I don't expect to be asked, have no expectation about it at all," Edwards said during an interview broadcast on NPR Tuesday (July 8). "(But) I am prepared to seriously consider anything, anything (Sen. Barack Obama) asks me to do for our country."

I was thinking about putting it between "About" and "Menu" in the left column, I'd like it to be "above the fold" as I think it is a good content navigation and discovery aid, particularly for new visitors.

Hope > Fear

[ Parent ]
That would be better, but I think pushing "Menu" down makes the site harder to navigate for newcomers. (0.00 / 0)

so one of the interesting things with the 'Hot Tags' is it enables you to subscribe to a RSS feed with that particular tag... interested in everything at BH with the "John Sununu" Tag? just subscribe

(Still figuring out RSS? Here's a great description... "It's like Netflix compared to the Video Store")

Hope > Fear

Not this one. How 'bout you. (4.00 / 5)
PolitickerNH reports "Billy Shaheen to speak at Dems office opening. In the comments I find this, among other things:
Putting Bill back in the forefront is going to aggravate a lot of Obama supporters.

Here is one Obama supporter, an Obama supporter before it was chic, that would gladly shake Bill Shaheen's hand and thank him for his tremendous service to your state and our nation.

Unity means unity!

The giant finds its gait.

It's far past time to be over that. (4.00 / 1)

Waxman/Hodes kudos (4.00 / 2)
Want to give a shout-out to Alex Lee and the Merrimack County Dems for one of the better political events I've recently attended.

I gotta tell ya that listening to Henry Waxman talk about the mole hill investigations carried out by the GOP-controlled House Oversight Committee (which the GOP refused to call it by) during the 90's about Pres. Clinton's Christmas card list compared to the significant investigations it is now conducting on phone-jamming, Plame-gate, Pat Tillman, etc. was riveting stuff.

And seeing Paul Hodes' enthusiasm when discussing the work he is doing on our state's behalf made me realize how lucky we are to have him on that committee (and in Congress). I truly believe like Waxman and Hodes that "shining sunlight" on our government should be a chief goal in the next Congress and presidential adminstration.

Open, transparent, accountable government in 2009 - brought to you by President Obama and Congressman Hodes.

Support the campaign to elect NH's Young Democrats:

Merrimack County Committee (0.00 / 0)
It was a wonderful turnout...we raised over $1k on a beautiful sunny summer Saturday afternoon. The people who came, many seniors, a few younger folk, so care for this country, our freedoms and our liberties under attack...they came to hear the Democrats' Eliot Ness. Waxman had high praise for the work Paul Hodes does on his Oversight and Investigations Committee.
He called the former prosecutor his toughest questioner, especially of the EPA chair who would not reveal who at the White House made him change his report on global warming. Waxman said he believes it was Bush. Their recent work includes a bill to control how Presidential emails are saved in the future, Archiving rules, timing, chain of custody etc. From Chairman Buckley to high schoolers, thank you one and all for coming !

This is not a novel to be tossed aside lightly. It should be thrown with great force.

The term immediately brings to mind an aging but randy Rod Stewart.

Mac to Ridge: Close, but no cigar (0.00 / 0)
Almost conservative enough, but plenty "admired" enough, Tom Ridge will introduce NH to "N.H. Veterans for McCain" tomorrow.

John McCain to Tom Ridge: Don't hold your breath for vice president spot

(emphasis mine)
...McCain was at Villanova University in the Philadelphia area, joining MSNBC's Chris Matthews for an interview session in front of a student crowd when the following exchange occurred:

MATTHEWS:  Let me ask you about your Republican Party.  You've been a maverick, and a lot of people like you because of that.  I want to ask you how much of a maverick you are.  Would you put a person on the ticket with you, like the former governor of this state who is very popular, Tom Ridge,  even though he may disagree on the issue of Roe v. Wade and abortion rights? .... Would that stop him?
MCCAIN:  I don't know if it would stop him, but it would be difficult.  I just want to say that Tom Ridge is one of the great Americans.  He served in the Vietnam War.  He served in Congress.  He served as a great governor of this state.  I am proud to call him my friend.
MATTHEWS:  Why that one issue?  Why is it that one litmus test issue?
MCCAIN:  I'm not saying that would be necessarily, but I am saying ... the respect and cherishing of the right of the unborn is one of the fundamental principles of my party.  And it's a ... deeply held belief of mine. But I just want to say, again, the admiration and respect and affection that I have for Tom Ridge -- he and I came to the Congress together many years ago.  And I can't tell you how much I admire him.
