Zombie NH Narrative Heads North to Canada

by: Dean Barker

Tue Aug 26, 2008 at 06:11:19 AM EDT

It can't be killed by journalists or bloggers. It knows no country's borders.
Demographics are on [Shaheen's] side. This state is still overwhelmingly white (blacks comprise less than one per cent) but less rural and conservative than it had been. Residents of liberal Massachusetts have fled to southern New Hampshire to escape high taxes. Some of those quaint shire towns now look like suburbs of Boston.
If someone can explain to me how the newest source of GOP growth in New Hampshire, "residents of liberal Massachusetts" who have fled to southern New Hampshire to escape high taxes" helps Jeanne Shaheen I'd love to hear it.

We should really start collecting all the known exempla and string them all together into a zombie composite sketch, and then we can put pictures up all over town with "Warning: Viral and Dangerous" written below it.  Maybe even offer a reward?

It's the new prejudice for the lazy. (4.00 / 1)
If they can't use race or gender or age or sexual preference on which to hang their predictions, they figure maybe the local variant of national origin will do the trick.  The "illegal/legal immigrant meme" is just another variant on that.

Americans seem peculiarly convinced that where people come from will provide a clue about them.  Maybe it's just a consequence of the fact that most people are from somewhere else and the assessments are just variants of the "sunny Florida" "cold NewHampshire" meme.

I'm inclined to think it's just laziness by people who don't really care to know much about each other. So, they settle for superficialities.  Some people think these inquiries are more meaningful than they are.

We moved up here from Mass. a few years ago, and our taxes are the same. (0.00 / 0)
But we did not move here to avoid taxes, we moved up because having a state vote GOP in New England was just embarrassing, especially as there are more college grads here than in any other state in the country.  What are they,  Milton Friedman devotees?  Also, we really appreciate  the deep interest people here have in politics, even the ones who are so very wrong.
