Convention Live Thread

CSPAN and PBS cover the podium most.

Governor Sibelius was just on - what a different, emotionally cooler experience it would be with her on the ticket instead of Biden! Federico Pena now up.

Warner coming, then Chelsea introduces Hillary.

Thank you Elwood (0.00 / 0)
I was wondering where it was.
I'm listening to the NHPR live stream, as I'm trying to do some office notes on the computer.

I'll switch to a video stream or the old TV when Hillary comes on.  Maybe Mark Warner, too...
There's now HIGH expectations for keynote convention speakers :-)

Waking up on November 5th with no regrets.

Last night, if I remember correctly she came on stage to "I was made to love her" and exited to "Isn't she lovely" any bets on "Signed, Sealed, Delivered" on Thursday night?

Warner's on (4.00 / 1)
He always reminds me of a high school AV geek.

He gives a talk about technological promise and innovation, great advances possible. "In four months we'll have a President who believes in science!"

The techno stuff should have been equally at home in either convention: it isn't Democratic to think nanotechnology is cool. And he talks about Post-Partisan Leadership.

But he was right the first time. Bush is anti-science - and so is the "no stem cell research,"  "climate change isn't proven," "evolution is a theory" Republican Party. After a drought of a couple of decades with no ideas from them - can we stop talking about "welcoming good ideas regardless of party"?

No :) (4.00 / 5)
Though I'd be happy if he said, "We welcome good ideas regardless of party. And if the Republicans ever come up with one, I will listen."

Hillary's speech (4.00 / 1)
No "suspense:" she started out speaking of the need to unify and fully support Obama.

Focused mostly on Democratic fundamentals: opportunity for all, health care, education, fair wages. Not so much on "Obama is great!" More, the Democratic Party and its mission are great.

Some time at the end pointing out the unacceptability of John McCain, including specifics - e.g., he wants to "privatize" Social Security.

A strong speech, I believe.

Hillary was brilliant. (4.00 / 3)
I went to watch her on TV (thankgoodness CSPAN feed was flawless tonight).

From the DNC Video, to Chelsea's introduction, to every word in her speech--- it was brilliant.

This probably deserves an entire diary, but here are a few highpoints for me:
- Bill mouthing "I love you" to her during the ovation before she even begins speaking.
-"It is time to take back this country that we love"
-"No way, no how, no McCain."
-The way she artfully weaved in the stories of people she met and championed on the campaign trail into her speech, but then used those poignant stories to show how useless and dangerous an angry vote for John McCain would be. "Were you in this just for me?  Or were you in it for that mother with cancer, that marine, that little boy..."  Honestly, that was nothing short of brilliant, and stirring, and quite emotional.
-Hillary was funny, the twin cities line got everyone laughing again.
-Recalling the Seneca Falls Convention and Harriet Tubman and the Underground Railroad.
-"Not a moment to lose, not a vote to spare."

If wishes were horses... she would have run in a cycle when Barack Obama wasn't running.  I had made up my heart to support him in 2004, hearing her tonight, I saw her full potential and a glimpse of what could have been--- what could still be.

We all, Democrats and Americans alike, need her.  We need her in a Democratic Senate, joined by Jeanne Shaheen and Mark Warner, with Ted Kennedy at his rightful spot as helmsman.  We need her working with Barack Obama and Joe Biden, pushing forth our agenda, advocating for us.

I can only hope that her message moved her supporters as much as it moved me.  We need every one of those 18 million votes.  Every one.

Waking up on November 5th with no regrets.

Were you in it for...? (4.00 / 4)
I want you to ask yourselves: Were you in this campaign just for me? Or were you in it for that young Marine and others like him? Were you in it for that mom struggling with cancer while raising her kids? Were you in it for that boy and his mom surviving on the minimum wage? Were you in it for all the people in this country who feel invisible?

The giant finds its gait.

That moment (0.00 / 0)
I was surprised how direct that was. "I want you to ask yourselves" -- it implies a big group is being addressed.  It implies the question is not settled, which I think it is. Commentators who want us to lose will be all over that line.

But Hillary did great overall, and drowned out any doubt with "No way, no  how, no McCain."

[ Parent ]
Strong (4.00 / 3)
I think that was perhaps the strongest part of the address. A very powerful line of reasoning. Resonated well with all I spoke with here.

Nothing less than the fate of our nation and the future of our children hang in the balance. (4.00 / 3)
Harriett Tubman had one piece of advice.

If you hear the dogs, keep going.

If you see the torches in the woods, keep going.

If they're shouting after you, keep going.

Don't ever stop. Keep going.

If you want a taste of freedom, keep going.

Even in the darkest of moments, ordinary Americans have found the faith to keep going.

I've seen it in you. I've seen it in our teachers and firefighters, nurses and police officers, small business owners and union workers, the men and women of our military - you always keep going.

We are Americans. We're not big on quitting.

But remember, before we can keep going, we have to get going by electing Barack Obama president.

We don't have a moment to lose or a vote to spare.

The giant finds its gait.

Obama for POTUS (4.00 / 1)
and Hillary for SCOTUS.

The giant finds its gait.

It's a good day to be a Democrat. (0.00 / 0)
Future Senator Mark Warner hit a lot of the points I personally look for, and I see why so many wanted him to run--maybe should have practiced his speech a bit more, but aces on content.

Deval Patrick lives up to the hype.  There were speeches from every region of the nation tonight, and Governor Patrick made New England proud.  I do hope there's a spot for him in the Obama Administration.

I've never heard Governor Schweitzer speak, but he impressed me too.  Not just anybody could energize that crowd that's been there all day so well.  He reminded me of Bill Richardson--in case you hadn't heard, I'm a fan.

Hillary Clinton...is back.  What I saw and heard tonight was the best speech of her career, it was exactly what she needed to do and what we as a party needed from her.  I've been pretty critical of her in recent months, but if Hillary supporters found themselves as reconciled by her words tonight as I did, we can stop worrying about party unity going forward.

Hillary Clinton is many things, but she is not an actress--if she hadn't been sincere tonight, it would have shown.  She's on board, and tonight she demonstrated why she came so close to being the nominee herself.

And the Republicans' keynote speaker is Rudy Giuliani.  Enough said.

PS: If you're watching talking heads on a different channel and you haven't been treated to Rachel Maddow facing off with Pat Buchanan over and over again during the convention coverage, you're missing out, and if you don't have MSNBC, find it on YouTube.

okay so I am jaded (4.00 / 1)
they are all acting to some degree
isn't it really a job to most but the exceptional among them, needing to get re-lected etc ?
I went to sleep while she was speaking because it had all been parsed before she spoke, and I was not so taken with the
delivery. She made herself say she supports Barack wholeheartedly, but wasn't the rest keeping herself in the lineup for 2016 when she'll be as Rendell said "68, a young 68". In Politics 101 there is some cynicism required folks.

This is not a novel to be tossed aside lightly. It should be thrown with great force.

That's okay Jon... (4.00 / 1)
They may all be acting, but I did see some real emotion last night.  If she wants to posture herself for 2016, that's fine, I'll start working for her campaign in 2014... so long as she's not planning on a run in 2012.

I'm glad I switched over from radio to TV for her address.  I've never seen such raw emotion on Bill's face.  He was holding back tears several times and I saw a look of real acceptance on his part, FINALLY, that this was not happening for her this time around.

Waking up on November 5th with no regrets.

I took it as conciliatory, but now in thinking of all the times she said "future" ... you may be jaded, JBB, but you're sharp.

For the here and now, she delivered.  Good enough for me for now.

Rendell, Begala, Carville...people who need to let it go. (4.00 / 1)
Look, I see your point, Jon, and by the way, when that 2016 primary comes around, I doubt I'll be voting for Hillary--she's not my type of candidate, and I can think of some others I'd like to see run then, or at some point.  But for now, she's doing the right thing, and I for one applaud her for that, because it's more than could be said for some of her historical predecessors--Jerry Brown never did endorse her husband in '92.

One thing missing from Hillary's speech (4.00 / 4)
When she went after McCain she mentioned equal pay - but not choice. He has tried to play both sides on choice but has ended up fully boxed in: he has committed to naming another Scalia.

That's a critical issue. I hope it gets underlined this week.

The exhausted media, part II (0.00 / 0)
Colbert has a cold of some sort. I felt bad for him -- he can't take the night off.

A personal goal (0.00 / 0)
Can I be on the convention writing team? Maybe when I grow up in 2020 or something? Hillary's line about McCain and Bush "appearing in the twin cities, because you can't tell them apart" was a good line, but it really felt like it came from a writing team -- like anybody could have said it, and Hill picked it out of the pile.

That's not to give her credit. She delivered it well.
