The 21st Century GOP is Kid Friendly, Part Two

by: Dean Barker

Wed Sep 03, 2008 at 06:01:27 AM EDT

What does it mean for the future of the Republican party that Senators Sununu and Gregg are downplaying the fact that they are avoiding the GOP Convention on the one hand...

...and on the other Team McCain-Palin is highlighting the fact that Levi Johnston will be making an appearance there?

Adding: and how much do you want to bet that, when Palin finally emerges from her bizarre seclusion, they'll use the two baby stories with as much intention of political gain, or more, than the phony scorn they've dumped in the media/blogs (AP excepted) for discussing the story.

Doesn't Match (0.00 / 0)
"The 21st Century" and "GOP" are two terms that don't match.  I'll keep checking other dictionaries, but I haven't found the match in any I've looked in.

It is an oxymoron n/t (0.00 / 0)

"OP" no G. and that fits the no longer Grand theme of this American Century well.

This is not a novel to be tossed aside lightly. It should be thrown with great force.

The Republican party is mainly about male authority and that male (0.00 / 0)
authority is directly derived from paternity (from which we get patriotism and the patriot act and the patriot missile, etc.).  In other words, children aren't important in their own right or even as the transmitters of social values and accomplishments into the future.  Children are things to be used and abused to certify and validate male authority.

The words patriotism is not directly derived from the word paternity. Both words are derived from the Latin word "pater", which does mean "father", but the fact they share as a root the Latin word "father" doesn't mean that either fatherhood or love of country are bad things.

You are way off base to state that Republicans think children are things to be used and abused.

Peggy Noonan on Governor Palin (4.00 / 3)
When she didn't know the mike was on.

Her point on Senator Hutchinson is the one I've been talking to my colleagues at work about; if he wanted to pick a Republican woman, pick the most qualified Republican woman, please.

21 Century GOP is kid friendly? Not my kids! (4.00 / 2)
It is very interesting to note that the Vice Presidential Candidate Sarah Palin has a child who sadly suffers with having trisomy 21 (Down's Syndrome).  However she will have her salary and subsequent pensions from the State of Alaska and have nanny service to help her take care of her child.  It must be nice....

Meanwhile there are hundreds and thousands of parents who have children that face challenges  from MR, Downs Syndrome, Quadraplegia all the way to those who have childrens with Autism who have exceeding difficulty with taking care of their children often to the point of where one parent has to stay home and care for the children full-time even with them at school.

The problem is that the policies of the Republicans led by Bush 43 and if let it happen McCain have instituted an unfunded NCLB mandate mean time veto a bill providing increased benefits to schools for Special Education.(BTW Sununu and Gregg voted against it making sure the veto stuck) These benefits could be used for public after schools programs for special education. This shows the irresponsibility once again of the right wing towards public school education and to the children of special needs that need all the help they can get to prove they can learn in school.

Meantime cause we don't get much help other then the income adjusted SSI my children get and not much I might add, we struggle to make do with the little we have.

I believe our Democratic Candidates from Lynch to Shea Porter all the way to Barack should make a point of this to the voters.  Any voter especially those with special needs children would see the plight faced by othewrs and support the Democratic inititives toward improving all public education, special needs especially to NCLB a true national inititive.
