Obama should issue a clarification

by: elwood

Wed Sep 10, 2008 at 15:20:19 PM EDT

John McCain is screaming bloody murder because Obama described McCain's economic plans as "putting lipstick on a pig."

McCain claims that this was a sly way of insulting Governor Palin, who had referred to herself as a pit bull in lipstick. McCain claims that Obama's meaning was clear: he called Palin a pig.

It's difficult to maintain a fair perspective on these charges. But, after a little introspection, I believe Obama should offer a clarification of his language.

elwood :: Obama should issue a clarification
When I review my remarks, I realize I was a little careless in my choice of words. I certainly did not intend to suggest that Governor Palin is a "pig," but given her earlier comment about lipstick I can see why some people took offense.

So let me be clear: Governor Palin is no pig. The proper term for someone who feeds at the federal trough for millions and millions of earmarks each year, more per resident than any other state, for someone who hired a lobbyist to get some $27 million in federal funds for a town of six thousand: that term is "hog."

Sorry for the confusion.

Actually Biden should issue it n/t (0.00 / 0)

To quote Paul Begala: (4.00 / 3)
McCain and Palin also claim the Alaska governor opposes earmarks -- despite the fact that she's gotten her state so much pork she's at risk for trichinosis.

What he SHOULD do is air the full video of what he said as an ad. (0.00 / 0)
It's a good argument he's making, and he doesn't bring up Sarah Palin once.

Also, maybe [Once-Upon-A-Time McCain]-Feingold should be amended to require the "I'm John Smith and I approve this message." part in internet videos, just like signs have to say they're approved.

McCain used the expression multiple times during the Primaries (4.00 / 2)
directed against Hillary Clinton...

The Obama campaign pointed out that Mr McCain himself had used the "pig in lipstick" analogy only last year to describe Hillary Clinton's healthcare plan. It denied the nominee had been referring to Mrs Palin, noting that he used the analogy in the context of discussing Mr McCain's policies.

This is not a novel to be tossed aside lightly. It should be thrown with great force.

Obama on Letterman: (4.00 / 3)
"If I had been talking about Governor Palin, in that metaphor she would be the lipstick and McCain's policies the pig."
