The Smartest Man in the Senate

by: Dean Barker

Sat Oct 11, 2008 at 20:16:37 PM EDT

John E. Sununu, after pallin' around with Governor of Alaska some snowmobiling guy, defends the First Dude's wife:
"I think the [Troopergate] report said she acted completely within the law," said Sununu.

From the Troopergate Report:

"For the reasons explained in section IV of this report, I find that Governor Sarah Palin Abused her power by violating Alaska Statute 39.52.110(a) of the Alaska Executive Branch Ethics Act." [Branchflower Report to the Alaska Legislative Council, Page 8]

Also, see Kathy's take on this for why this particular lapse is so telling.

The smartest man in the senate either didn't read the report before saying what he thought was in it, or, he didn't understand it, or, he overlooked  the report's conclusion.

But this is the guy who saw the financial meltdown coming five years ago - he just forgot to tell anyone about it.

Energy and persistence conquer all things.

Republicans, in particular, seem unclear about the (0.00 / 0)
fact that the agents of government are under a legal mandate to perform certain acts in a certain way; no more and no less.  They don't understand that it's not enough not to violate the criminal statutes which apply to all persons (natural and fictive).  In taking the oath of office they sign on for certain duties and, if they fail to carry them out or abuse their powers, they are liable to being removed.

Clearly, the impeachment process, which leads to removal from office or not, hasn't been utilized often enough in recent years.  And in Bill Clinton's case it was mis-used to the extent that his official duties and responsibilities weren't an issue.

Physical assaults on foreign detainees, on the other hand, are both an abuse of power and a violation of the criminal law--as were the burglaries Richard Nixon authorized.

The Governor of Alaska using her office in pursuit of a personal vendetta would seem to justify her impeachment, just as surely as if she used her office to arrange contracts to enrich her spouse.
