Colin Powell Endorses Barack Obama For President: A Class Act By A Longtime Republican

by: Rep. Jim Splaine

Sun Oct 19, 2008 at 10:23:33 AM EDT

I was transfixed on Sunday morning watching former Secretary of State Colin Powell appearing on Meet The Press to endorse Barack Obama.

It is an incredible and heartfelt endorsement. While endorsements often don't matter much, I think this one will.  It was firm, clear, direct, honest, and hard-hitting.

And Colin Powell made the endorsement in the manner of a statesperson, not being overly critical of John McCain, but pointing out continuing problems with the Republican Party of these latter days -- that they "win" by destroying others, that they go after the irrelevancies like whom one is associated with so they can avoid the discussion about what really affects people.

Without using the words, Colin Powell was telling us that John McCain has lost his way.  He's misplaced any vision about the future he had, and instead has allowed campaign consultants and other hacks make a mess of his campaign, and himself.  Problem is, of course, that also shows a lack of character and a lack of leadership.

Powell also seemed chagrined with the surprise selection by McCain of Sarah Palin.  It seemed like Powell was asking McCain, "what were you thinking?"

Let's not lose focus of the reality that Colin Powell contributed to getting us into Iraq.  I think it was clear he didn't want to invade, and he didn't want to make the "close the case" presentation at the United Nations shortly before the invasion.  And with his military training, he most likely believed his role as Secretary of State was to follow the leader.

But he didn't have to kiss the butts of Dick Cheney and George W. Bush.  He probably had to say "Yes Sir" once the decision was made to invade, although that's open to debate,  but he could have done a better job questioning the "intelligence" about Weapons Of Mass Destruction," and the wisdom of changing long-standing American ideals by attacking a nation that hadn't attacked us.

All said and done, however, perhaps Colin Powell would have made a fascinating President in his own right.  Hopefully, a President Barack Obama will call on him to fill an important role in his administration.

Colin Powell also says he will vote for Barack Obama on November 4th because of the positive amazing message it will give to the world -- that we are ready to do things differently, and that we are willing to talk with people who we haven't have a conversation with lately.  We need to do that.  If we don't talk with our enemies, about the only thing left is to fight them.

Colin Powell's endorsement of Barack Obama was a class act by a longtime Republican.  Many other Republicans should take his lead.

Al Haig! (4.00 / 3)
I just heard a great response from John McCain about Colin Powell's endorsement.  He said that former Secretary of State Al Haig has endorsed him!  Well, that's settled:  score uneven.

Haig's endorsing McCain (4.00 / 2)
because he's white. All those whiteys stick together, y'know.

I don't mean to rain on the Powell-Obama parade but... (4.00 / 1)

... the fact is Powell did compromise himself at the UN, when he said Iraq was developing weapons of mass destruction. We can't forget that. As a result thousands of American soldiers died and over 100,000 Iraqi civilians also died.

We can't forget about Powell's decision just because he endorsed Obama. As a Democrat, and from someone who is still voting for Obama, I hope people understand this. Powell CHOSE to participate in conveying false information about Iraq being an imminent threat. People are dead as a result who had no right to be there in the first place.

I have mixed feelings (4.00 / 1)
I think Powell still has credibility with independents, so if that's the rationale, I think we say "Thank you for the endorsement."

The culpability slope is steep and long, and a lot of Democrats sit upon it.

Time to stand up. Prevent the next war.

I'm not trying to convince you here, just explain my thinking. I'm glad you made your point.

Right... (4.00 / 1)

... I still welcome the endorsement. I just don't think we can just bury his decision making and be part of a blatant put on at the U.N. I still can't believe a man of his integrity could do such a thing. He's bound to make bad decisions (all of them do). Just not as tragic or costly as this one.

I hope there will be some kind of atonment (sp.?) or he takes some kind of responsibility for cleaning up the mess if he's a part of the Obama administration. An apology to the American public would be suffice too. Something like that.

Integrity (0.00 / 0)
I think Democrats tend to cut Colin Powell too much slack because he disagreed with Cheney sometimes, and Rumsfeld didn't like him, or vice versa and what does it matter.

He is believed to have integrity -- I agree, I think he has some integrity -- because they don't?

It's time to raise this bar.

I missed this... (4.00 / 2)

Now this is good. From Powell's endorsement speech.

"Is there something wrong with being Muslim in America? No, that's not America," he said.

"He was 14 years old at the time of 9/11, and he waited until he could go serve his country, and he gave his life," Mr. Powell said. "Now, we have got to stop polarizing ourselves in this way."

Very nice.

Do you expect the Secretary of State (0.00 / 0)
to question the CIA?  How can we govern if the government does not trust itself?  I think that Iraq was a huge mistake, and I, like Barack Obama opposed the war from the start.  But my opposition was not because I questioned intelligence, I questioned the philosophy of the Bush Administration for pre-emptive war.

Now that we know that the intelligence was completely wrong we know that the judgment of Barack Obama and myself was much more prudent than that of Bush, McCain, and Powell.  The difference is that Powell now realizes that error, and has endorsed the candidate who has the judgment not to let that happen again.

Let us not question his integrity because of his role in starting the war, the same war that was authorized by many sitting Democrats in Congress, some of whom ran in the Democratic Primary for President and who did not receive the same scrutiny as Colin Powell.  I credit Colin Powell for his service to our nation, as a soldier, as a public servant, and now as a well respected endorser of Barack Obama.

It's his job to ask tough questions, no matter whom (4.00 / 1)

With all due respect, it was Powell's job to question the intelligence, not subscribe to group think. Especially since 14 intelligence agencies all reported that Iraq WAS NOT an imminent threat to the United States (see Vincent Bugliosi's "The Prosecution of George W. Bush for Murder"). Intelligence was being cherry-picked and stovepiped up the chain of command to Cheney, Rumsfeld, Wolfolwitz, etc. to make their case for war. IMO this wasn't the philosophy of the Bush Administration it was the deliberate decision making and deliberate abuse of power and control to get a war started when there was no war to be fought.  Powell knew about this information. He didn't do anything to stop it. That is a major blemish on his record and I hope Powell can reverse that if he were to be part of the Obama Administration. So yeah, he acts gentlemanly and such but that doesn't excuse him from being a part of the crime, misleading the nation to war.

With that being said, I do admire what he said at the Obama endorsement. We all need to be speaking out against Michelle Bachmann.
