Gregg Sprinting to the Center?

(I've been following Gregg's 111th pretty closely, and I think the picture is a little more nuanced than Nate notes from his national lens.  But more when I can articulate it... - promoted by Dean Barker)

Kos had a little blip in the open thread about Senator Gregg today. To paraphrase, he said Gregg must be pretty worried about his seat, because
the normally conservative senator has become one of Obama's most reliable Republican votes.

He then links to Nate Silver's blog.

After Snowe, two Republicans have supported the administration on 6 of 7 votes: George Voinovich of Ohio and Judd Gregg of New Hampshire. Voinovich, who always ranks as among the most moderate Republicans, isn't really a surprise, but Gregg, who has a fairly conservative voting record, perhaps is. Such are the perils of running for re-election in a state that Obama won by 10 points.

It seems Gregg is trying to run to the center to be viable for re-election. The question is, will it work? Will he vote for the stimulus package? He voted against SCHIP while Bush was president. Will he do a 180 on that as well?

And if he retools himself as a "moderate" does he have a chance in '10?

if Gregg didn't have a whole career (4.00 / 2)
built on leaning far to the right, I'd say this might be dicey. But, since he does, I think voters will see it for what it is - trying to save his ass. His GOP constituents will hate him for pandering to the "left" and Democrats will just continue to hate him, period.  
This was predicted here a long time ago (0.00 / 0)
when we were talking about Sununu, before the Democratic Senate primary was even shaping up. It appeared Gregg was voting further right than Sununu to offer Sununu the cover of the "moderate" label. The suggestion here was that in the couple years after Nov. 2008, Gregg would start to vote in a way that would similarly make him look like a moderate, because voters have short memories.

President Obama may be considering appointing Sen. Gregg to the Commerce position.  Wow.

If so, how does NH fill that vacancy?  Is it an appointment by Gov. Lynch or through a special election?  Does Bill Gardner get to pick the replacement from a Popsicle stick chosen out of a hat?

Sorry to post this as an unrelated topic to the discussion at hand.  I'm not all that blog savvy.
