A Basket Full of Medals

A Dover, NH Navy man today was honored today - 50 years after he was discharged. He expected to receive one medal today, at the office of Congresswoman Carol Shea-Porter, but instead, she had 9 medals for him.

One of the things I admire most about my Congresswoman is her steadfast commitment to our men and women in the military. Carol may be the most natural, gracious politician I've ever seen. As you can see in the video - Carol knew whose day this was - and there was no grandstanding on her part.

A quite sense of duty and honor (4.00 / 3)
Often, we see veterans decked out in regalia, full fanfare along the parade route. It would be reasonable to conclude that veterans seek recognition for their service, and some do.

More often then not, you will find a veteran that has put those days behind them. He/She has done their duty, and quitely carries the sense of honor with them, as they go on in life.

When the community finds these "quite ones," and recognizes what they have done, even in a simple way, it brings pride to the one recognized. That pride is imbued with the realization that he/she served a worthy community.

Carol Shea-Porter clearly understands the importance of what Obama has called "the sacred trust." More importantly, she consistantly acts, guided by this understanding. Veterans are keenly aware of this type of spadework. Small, steady progress shows commitment and dedication to a just cause.
