Sununu's reaction to medical marijuana ignores science, reality

by: Rocketman

Mon Mar 23, 2009 at 10:02:05 AM EDT

John DiStaso's March 18 "Granite Status" column at the Union-Leader carried the following "Quick Hit" regarding HB 648:

GOP chair Sununu says that passage yesterday of a medical marijuana bill by the House Health, Human Services and Elderly Affairs Committee on a 13-7 vote "confirmed the Democratic agenda is coming out of San Francisco." He said Lynch "has to stand up and say he will veto this one or else lose all credibility as a rational centrist." But Matt Simon, executive director of New Hampshire Common Sense Marijuana Policy, called it "a good day for democracy."

Simon deconstructed Sununu's archaic analysis of the issue in his blog at NHInsider.com, which concludes with the following paragraph:

Fortunately, most New Hampshire policymakers from both parties realize this isn't 1989, when Sununu left the Governor's office, or even 1998, when Sununu left his position as co-host of CNN's Crossfire. Times have changed. If Sununu truly believes in the "Live Free or Die" motto he claims to cherish, he will eventually recognize that medical decisions should be made by doctors and patients in New Hampshire, not by unaccountable bureaucrats in Washington, DC.

The House will vote this week on whether New Hampshire should become the 14th state to protect seriously ill patients from arrest when they use marijuana with a physician's recommendation.  More information is available at NHCompassion.org

Sununu's Blindness (4.00 / 4)
Hey Blue Hampshire, I posted this on the NHinsider story and I wanted to post it here as well - just so you know, not all Republicans are still hung up on 1969.

"I would certainly say that I'm a Republican, but it's hard to do so when the party leadership is so obviously out of touch with the state's voters. This medical marijuana bill has nothing to do with liberals or San Francisco, and everything to do with compassion and helping seriously ill people. If Sununu can't get over this obvious culture war baggage, we Republicans might need to start thinking about new leadership if we want to stay relevant."

Thank you for that. n/t (0.00 / 0)

any Republican who is... (0.00 / 0)
Amy Republican who is in touch with science and reality is not a true Republican.  The Republican Party's core values (at the moment) are hostility to science and a disregard for reality.

At the risk of being redundant, let me assert that (0.00 / 0)
the state has no business interfering in what individuals inhale, ingest, inject or, for that matter, excrete.  The right to privacy precludes such interference.  On the other hand, the reason the Constitution is designed to limit the behavior of the agents of government is because the temptation to interfere with individual rights is recognized as being difficult to resist.  It's why we need eternal vigilance.
Since modern day Republicans are into influence, rather than action, it's not surprising that Sununu comes down on the side of telling people what to do.

Former drug warriors for med marijuana (0.00 / 0)
I just completed a radio interview with a director of LEAP-Law Enforcement Against Prohibition. These guys were on the front lines of the disastrous war. They're clearly not on any Democratic agenda. A recent poll in NH shows 71% favor allowing this healing medicine. If anybody can think of a radio station which might like some sound on this, like the guest pointing out that the AG is not a medical expert, please reply and I'll follow up. Thanks.
