Congratulations, Senator Judd Gregg

by: Dean Barker

Thu Mar 26, 2009 at 05:47:16 AM EDT

I've been hair-on-fire pleading for some prominent Democrat - any prominent Democrat - with parallel media power to fight back against Judd Gregg's 24/7 media assault on Obama's budget and the health care, environment, and education priorities contained within it.

And this is what we got.

Congratulations Senator Gregg.  You know how to play the game well for your interests.  While it's incredible to me that in 2009 I still have to look to the other side of the aisle to admire political strength, I will admit: well done, sir.

Update: Harry Reid, of all least likely people, offers a glimmer of hope. This is also good in that I was beginning to think Evan Bayh was the new majority leader; I figured maybe I missed a press release or something.

Here's (4.00 / 2)
a rescued diary about Judd Gregg.

He's very busy making sure any and all public money goes to benefit the wealthy. When health care and other social necessities are mentioned, he becomes a budget hawk.

Hey everybody, what about the trillions of dollars spent and continuing to be spent on the war? And off budget.

Will this charade, which in the linked diary is rightfully laid at Ronald Reagan's feet, ever end?

No Ms Shaheen (0.00 / 0)
We do not need to compromise with the Limbaugh Party any more than they had to compromise with us to get their stuff passed. Unfortunately it is faux dems like you that make it necessary.

...the Doo Dah Man once told me you've got to play your hand. Sometimes the cards ain't worth a dime if you don't lay 'em down.

She's really stuck on that "governor" role isn't she. (4.00 / 1)
The paternal/maternal attitude is not becoming when one is addressing the citizens of the nation.

I often prefer having been wrong.  Having been wrong about Jeanne Shaheen would be nice.

And what's with the geographic references?  Does she think she's representing her home state, Missouri?

Benefit of doubt (4.00 / 1)
There's another possibility here, and it is that these "moderate" Dem Senators are providing some cover for Obama.  Rather than negotiating with "just say no" Republicans, aka Judd Gregg and company, Obama now has the luxury of being bi-partisan within his own caucus.  A tad more to his liking, I might suggest.

We'll see how this kabuki theater plays out, and I admit that I'm a political neophyte, but this also isn't your father's Democratic party.

So, play the game.  Voters in NH should let Jeanne know how they stand on Obama's budget and the reconciliation process.  I've met the Shaheens several times(adding that they wouldn't know me from Adam), and while Jeanne is a political realist, she's still a good Democrat and a tremendous improvement over Sununu.

She gets the benefit of the doubt from me - at least for now.  If all this hand-wringing proves to be apt, I reserve the right to change my position. :>)

But that makes no sense. (0.00 / 0)
The conservative Democrats don't enable Obama to bypass negotiations with the Republicans - he must compromise with BOTH groups. Shaheen's group cannot give him a 60th vote. And they are determined to make that 60th vote necessary.
