Pundits & Predictions

Kevin Landrigan, last Sunday:
The House will likely vote later this week to reject legislation (HB 436) that would legalize same-sex marriages.

...The issue got much more traction than many thought possible, coming only a year after civil unions for gays and lesbians became New Hampshire law.

Yeah, I'd say it got more traction than many thought possible.

I don't want to be a poor sport, so here's my own prediction.

If the Governor can't find a way to bully the Senate Dems into voting this down, he will lack the political space to veto.

So that means we've got some polite but emphatic letter writing to do to our state senators.

Will the State Senate do what is right or will it do what is politically expedient? (0.00 / 0)
I was at the State House today watching the debates and the vote. I heard that State Senate President Sylvia Larson is worried about the political fallout if the Senate approves same-sex marriage.

Senator Larson, please do the right thing: urge the Senate to vote in favor of HB 436. Rights should take precedence over politics.

Political appearances should not be your concern.

BTW, I saw Pam Walsh in the hallway after the vote - she did not look very happy.

There's not much evidence (0.00 / 0)
that a vote against gay marriage is good politics, for our Dem majority.

Let's Keep Our Eyes On The Tunnel (4.00 / 4)
...the tunnel(vision) of passing this bill through the Senate.  For the next three or four weeks, I love all of our State Senators, I love their dogs and cats, I love their cars and shoes.  Let's find a way to convince them to vote "yes."

In the meantime, I love our Governor too.  Let's find a way to encourage him to continue to allow our dialogue on this issue in New Hampshire's unique "citizen's legislature."  He has the option of listening to the discussion of the next several weeks and allow the success or not of this bill to be determined by the nation's largest "People's House."  I trust he will allow that democracy to evolve.

I'm glad you're filling the Good Cop role (0.00 / 0)
for  our Senators, Jim...

Let Him Hear From The Masses... (0.00 / 0)
...the State Senators likely to vote against House Bill 436 need to hear from "our side."  We don't want them to be able to say they heard from a hundred people against, and a handful for.  So, let him hear from you!  Call, write, E-Mail -- make it up close and personal if you can by visiting his office at the State House.  He'll be polite.

You can spend your time instead (4.00 / 3)
fighting Jeb's smear machine against Bud Martin.

Adopt-A-Senator (0.00 / 0)
...let him or her get to know you.  Make that Senator your special friend for the next few weeks.  And of course, each of the Senators really represent all of us -- so let them all know your feelings.  It's best when you write a personal E-Mail, or letter and tell them a personal story.  Personal stories are very effective testimony on any issue.  Or give them a call.  Or invite them to join you for coffee.
