CSP: "I May be Straight, but I'm not Narrow"

by: Dean Barker

Tue Apr 28, 2009 at 06:17:57 AM EDT

Why can't we get more statewide Democratic leaders like the ones we have representing us in Congress?
And here's a shocker - Carol Shea-Porter's views on DADT did not cost her a re-election in 2008. Mirabile dictu!

I have to admit I haven't decided yet. About half way through my (4.00 / 2)
45 years of marriage, it came as a real shock to discover that long white side-burns are a real turn-on.  And, since the spouse is entirely lacking in sideburns (making it easier to keep his beard in trim), it made me wonder wherein his attraction lay and what else I might discover about myself.

Sort of calls into question snap judgments about other people, methinks.  :)

Carol is awesome. (4.00 / 1)
We are so lucky to have Carol representing us.

Carol always (4.00 / 1)
says the right thing.

sanctimonious purist/professional lefty

I really needed this (4.00 / 1)
Thanks for putting it up.

She is wonderful, a person that can speak from the heart and head at the same time.

Key Quote (4.00 / 3)
"In about 10 to 15 years we are going to be embarrassed we even had this discussion. And frankly, I'm embarrassed right now."

I have my little bigotries (4.00 / 5)
I am somewhat ashamed to admit. What I'm sharing here is that the diary title was on a sticker I saw back in the early '90's, at UMASS Lowell.

I was just out of the Army and teh gays were odd to me. Homosexuality didn't bother me so much, but the real queens gaying it up did. I tend to prefer guys being guys and the guy acting like a girl threw off my whole social outreach demeanor. I don't really care what you do in the privacy of your own bedroom, but back then it tweaked me out when dudes with scarves would come swishing by.

Well, that sticker made me think... and think....and think some more. To this day, when I find myself challenged by my reality map, I remind myself that I must strive not to be narrow.

That said, my personal imperfections are not found in our Constitution. Equality is an American ideal that we are compelled to honor.

Whack-a-mole, anyone?

Hey, nobody's perfect (4.00 / 1)
And, as a gay male, often teh gays--especially effeminate ones--are a little odd to me too. Although, scarves to strike me as especially effeminate :).

What a beautiful world we live in!

Whack-a-mole, anyone?

Culture shock does not have to include bigotry. (4.00 / 1)
And that's really the point of this country--it's okay to be different.

Unfortunately, we live in a nation founded on liberty and a society that demands conformity, and it seems the two are constantly at war.

and marriage (4.00 / 1)
And here's a shocker - Carol Shea-Porter's views on DADT did not cost her a re-election in 2008.

Neither did her open support of marriage equality.  She was quoted in the press as supporting marriage for same-sex couples back during her campaign in 2006.

She's an awesome member of congress and I couldn't be prouder.

Love it (0.00 / 0)
that is great stuff.

One of the key pieces of my beginning to understand the issues faced by the GLBT community was a flier handed out at an AIDS quilt display in Boston circa 1988(?)

- When did you decide to become an Heterosexual?
- Have you told your Parents you are a Heterosexual?
- Are you sure? Maybe you just need a good Homosexual Lover.

etc. etc.

Wish I could vote for Carol from CD-2.

Gay Marraige Tally (0.00 / 0)
I hear that Senator Sgambati is leaning in voting for HB 436.  Focus on Sylvia & Lou.

Thanks (0.00 / 0)
