Senate Democrats Stand for Equality

by: Garth Corriveau

Wed Apr 29, 2009 at 14:49:07 PM EDT

Today is a great day to live in New Hampshire because our Senate Democrats, by a 13 to 11 vote, did us all proud by moving marriage equality one step closer to becoming the law of our land.

They deserve our congratulations and our support moving forward for their courageous stand in supporting HB 436.

It does bear mentioning, however, that a few of us in the progressive and Democratic community may have gone overboard in our criticisms of the senators. Criticism is constructive only when that criticism is earned. Overall, sharing our opinions in real time is a wonderful exercise in Democratic dialogue, but I think we should use today's historic example to consider keeping some of our more intemperate comments regarding political speculation to ourselves. Unlike New York or California, New Hampshire is a small state where everything gets passed along.

I admit that while some of my own comments as a party leader, public and private, may have caused some personal pain to one or more of them, their actions today overshadowed our words, and for that, I thank the N.H. Senate Democrats for passing this historic marriage equality legislation.

Passion Isn't Anger... (4.00 / 2)
...and in a democracy I hope it's always okay to show passion.  Sometimes elected officials need to see the passion from others in order to better understand the cause.

The Democratic State Senators understood this issue -- just like Democrats in the House did.  What is sad is that NONE of the Republican State Senators seemed to care a bit.  Nor did but one dozen House Republicans.  They just don't care.

We lost just one Democratic Senator on this issue, and I think he had religious concerns and I think we should all respect that.  In his case, he was a strong supporter of getting Civil Unions approved two years ago, and he has been a lifelong leader on issues of diversity and human equality.  He's a class act on so many issues.

ALL 14 Democratic New Hampshire State Senators made many of us proud to be Democrats today.  ALL 10 Republican New Hampshire State Senators reminded us why we are Democrats.

And kudos to you! (4.00 / 1)
Rep. Splaine,
It's in no small measure b/c of your passion, optimism and "yes we can" attitude that the right to marry is another step closer to being afforded to all NH citizens, regardless of sexual orientation. I, for one, am convinced that kind of attitude can move political mountains.

Although much work remains, I hope you enjoy the day ... with the help of 13 Senate Democrats, you earned it!

Alderman-elect, City of Manchester (Ward Six)
