Please: It's Not Over -- Keep Contacting Governor John Lynch About HB 436

by: Rep. Jim Splaine

Wed May 13, 2009 at 20:48:45 PM EDT

(With link added by me - promoted by Dean Barker)

It's not over until it's over.  Please, keep contacting Governor John Lynch about House Bill 436 and urge him to support marriage equality.  Our opposition certainly is.

Write a letter, telephone, send an E-Mail, FAX, or drop in to his office and leave a note.  If you see him out and about, let him know he should support marriage equality.

And thank him for allowing the discussion to occur in the Legislature -- something a certain unnamed neighboring Governor tried to stop by threatening early on, to use his one and single vote to veto.

I'm hoping John Lynch will support House Bill 436.  This is an opportunity for him to become a well-remembered Governor.  History treats well those leaders who stand against discrimination and in favor of equality and fairness.  This is an opportunity for him to become a great Governor.

But if he doesn't, at least he allowed for the discussion, and he seemed to be listening right up to the end.  It would be sad to see him use his one vote, through the power of veto, to negate those of so many others, but if he does it doesn't take away from the many good things he has done during the past five years.

Let's keep contacting Governor John Lynch.  Let's urge him not to allow New Hampshire to become an island of discrimination surrounded by Canada, Vermont, Maine, and Massachusetts.  That's a distinction that wouldn't positively reflect on New Hampshire values.  Nor should he want to have been responsible for that.  Just one signature is needed.

But whatever happens, let's keep the faith.  We will have full marriage equality.  Soon.  If not 2009, soon.  It will happen.  It could happen now.  With just one signature.

what happened to the positive tone of your previous assessments? are you hearing that governor lynch is inclined to veto the bill?

yeah, what's going on? (0.00 / 0)
what's with the somber tone of this message? It is really depressing and discouraging.

Encouraging People To Keep Contacting John Lynch... (0.00 / 0)
...what I'm trying to encourage is to keep the contacts going.  "Our side" has tailed off, and we have to continue the momentum.  The other side has a great deal of money behind them, and their hundreds of thousands of Robo-Calls have had the effect of getting people on their side to contact the Governor.

Also, whatever he chooses to do there is always the next try, and another day.  We can't let up, we can't give up.  I've been involved in a lot of issues through the years where the momentum slows down.  So, please forgive my tone, but we just don't know for sure what Governor John Lynch will do with House Bill 436, so that means we have to keep up the contacts and try to offset our opposition. This really is "crisis time."

Also, NH Freedom To Marry is in need of donations and has great ideas on their WEBSITE:  http://nhftm.org/  Great ideas for helping.  We won't win this just by Blogging on www.BlueHampshire.com, though that certainly helps to get information out.

If you didn't notice, a group of Republican House members met with the Governor today.  We're trying to offer the other point of view.  It takes work. Many thousands of hours have been spent by so many on our side on this cause, so we can't lose it in the final hours by not responding to our opposition.

Has he met (0.00 / 0)
with Democratic House members as well?

Keep the calls and letters coming (0.00 / 0)
I've called and e-mailed the governor. Everyone needs to keep doing this. The anti-marriage folks are acting as though civilization depends upon Lynch rejecting the bill.

We must act with no less urgency (if somewhat less hysteria).

Status of the bill? (0.00 / 0)
Could someone explain the exact status of the bill?
Apparently there are two bills, one some kind of correction to the other, and the correction still has not been ratified in some sense by the Legislature?

Both HB 436 and HB 310 (0.00 / 0)
Both House Bill 436, the marriage equality legislation, and House Bill 310, which provides for some technical adjustments in marriage statutes, are in the House Speaker's Office and will remain for a few more days as the House and Senate continue working on additional language that Governor John Lynch wants to further clarify statutory protections for religious organizations.

Then the expectation is that those bills along with an additional bill with the religious statutory protections will go to the Governor's Office for signature.

The process could change, but that seems to be the logistics at the moment.  It should work out if there's consensus to make it happen.
