Senate Judiciary Committee Approves Marriage Equality Amendment

by: RealNRH

Tue May 19, 2009 at 17:11:38 PM EDT

(Closer and closer... - promoted by Dean Barker)

I don't think it was particularly unexpected, but the marriage equality amendment demanded by Governor Lynch passed the Senate Judiciary Committee by a 3-2 vote, presumably along party lines. This should come to the full Senate tomorrow. My understanding is that it will then go to the House for a vote, then go through the enrollment process, which may be finished as early as Friday, or may take until next week to start his five-day clock.

And all the Republican unity in the world won't make it pay any attention when they howl 'Stop' at it now!

IT for John Lynch '04 and NHDP '08 - I'm liking my track record so far!

What time does the Senate meet today to discuss the changes? nt (0.00 / 0)

10 A.M. (0.00 / 0)

...... the senate pass the amendment and is sending it to the house for a vote today... according to local news, if it pass the house today, it will likely be sent to the governor by later this afternoon.... he will likely sign it between now and friday:)::):)

house will likely pass the amendment... let's pray:)

House vote (0.00 / 0)
Does anyone know what time this afternoon the House is scheduled to take up the vote on the amendment?

[ Parent ]
It may be as soon (4.00 / 1)
as they reconvene at 1:45. You can watch/listen here.

[ Parent ]
according to bostonherald.com.......... (0.00 / 0)
The state Senate has approved changes New Hampshire's governor demanded to sign legislation to make his state the sixth to allow gay marriage.

The House is to vote on the changes later Wednesday. If it adopts them, Gov. John Lynch could sign gay marriage into law as early as this afternoon.

Lynch said last week he wouldn't sign the legislation without language to better protect churches and their employees against lawsuits if their beliefs preclude them from marrying gays. The Senate added the language on a 14-10 vote Wednesday morning.

House is going to vote soon.... go check out live streaming on the new hampshire house webpage.

they are going to vote on hb73 at 2:30pm (0.00 / 0)
more info. soon

[ Parent ]
vote sounds like it could be close (0.00 / 0)
stay tune.

[ Parent ]
steve vaillancourt on now (4.00 / 1)
he's opposing the amendment, says it's unnecessary.

[ Parent ]
amazing how much comment (0.00 / 0)
a simple motion to concur attracts.

i'm worried they aren't going to pass it.... (0.00 / 0)
i sure hope i'm wrong....

Please God let it pass and let the governor signed it a.s.a.p.

[ Parent ]
I'd like that too, just to get off the rollercoaster (4.00 / 1)
but Vaillaincourt wants to defeat this language and send to a conference committee to match CT/VT language. Which I think could happen—if the vote's really that close, we might able to twist a few arms on a vote to go to committee.

ps - who was the younger lady Member who just spoke? It's saddening to see a person of my generation supporting bigotry.

[ Parent ]
it's getting sad in here (0.00 / 0)
I thought our citizen legislature was supposed to cut down on political pretense "vote this down because the process was bad! Waah!"

[ Parent ]
i'm getting pissed.... (0.00 / 0)
..... what poor excuses they are using to vote against this bill.

This is a sad day in new hampshire..... (0.00 / 0)
..... we are being played ....

they need to stop with the playing of games and pass this bill... send it to the governor....

this is nuts....

i'm very sad that new hampshire has done this:(:(

[ Parent ]
dude, relax (0.00 / 0)
they can go to conference, and presumably Vaillancourt would support, with only one other for that to happen. I think we can get to language the gov will sign.

That said, I am having some trouble following what is going on now with the conference motion.

[ Parent ]
Motion to conference accepted (0.00 / 0)

[ Parent ]
186-188 fails (0.00 / 0)
motion to conference, so we can all go around the merry-go-around again.

No wait, now a motion to indefinitely postpone conference.

[ Parent ]
Incredible. (0.00 / 0)
So is that it for marriage equality in New Hampshire for the near future?

[ Parent ]
My God (0.00 / 0)
Unbelievable.

I'm trying to stay composed at work, but this is really difficult.

What the hell happened???

[ Parent ]
gov language failed (0.00 / 0)
Next motion will probably a vote to go to conference committee with the Senate, which I  should think would pass (supporters and Steve Vaillancourt and a couple others)

relax, we're not done yet.

[ Parent ]
conference committee (0.00 / 0)
So, what was the basis for failure here? I would think that this extra language would get MORE people on board who might not otherwise be comfortable with it. What boneheaded liberals would vote this down? It's the only chance to get gay marriage passed!

Boneheads!

how come they don't... (0.00 / 0)
... do a second roll call vote and try changing a few people's votes....

they do second roll call votes on other issues....

this is nuts.

[ Parent ]
i blame the governor.... (0.00 / 0)
he should have signed the first bill.....

one man shouldn't have so much power:(

[ Parent ]
still has to sign or veto (0.00 / 0)
Deep breath. He still has to sign or veto 436. Yes, he's promised a veto if there's not new language, but we're not done.

DiFruscia seems to be indicating he will support a conference, which could provide language similar to or the same as the Gov's, which in turn could be sent to him.

Oh, and we have the most powerless governor in the nation.

[ Parent ]
I agree (0.00 / 0)
The more I read about this, and hindsight being what it is, Lynch really had no reason to object to the bill, and should have signed it. NH law and consititution already has protections for religious institutions. I really don't get what's going on here. It seems the bigots showed up to vote more than we hoped.
:(((

[ Parent ]
conference (0.00 / 0)
207-168. I think the Speaker appoints conference representatives to conference committee w/ the Senate, then both houses get to vote again. Then this companion bill, whatever language comes out of it, goes to the governor and he signs it alongside 436.

Conference (0.00 / 0)
Any ideas what the timetable for a conference would be?

[ Parent ]
no idea (0.00 / 0)
I'm just a citizen. I would guess that it's essentially up to the leadership of House & Senate. They seem to have pushed this companion bill through quickly, so I would be inclined to think that the committee would proceed similarly quickly...I'm hopeful that the conference can deliver better language than Lynch's that is nonetheless acceptable to him. Yes, I wish kowtowing to the most popular politician in the state wasn't necessary, but we can do this now only with his support...
