Why is a New Hampshire Democratic Senator the guest speaker at right-wing event?

by: Michael Marsh

Mon May 25, 2009 at 09:00:06 AM EDT

This caught my attention from Landrigan's weekend column in the Telegraph:

The anti-tax Americans for Prosperity will have D'Allesandro as its guest speaker Wednesday morning at Gauchos Restaurant in Manchester.

Americans for Prosperity (AFP) is a key group in the vast right-wing noise machine.  Their main goals are cutting taxes and preventing action to stop global warming. They were the organizer of last month's Tea Party protests and campaigned last year against the science of climate change with their Global Hot Air tour.

Major funders of AFP  include ExxonMobil and rightwing oil billionaire Bill Koch, who is also the group's chairman. Koch and his brother are two of the largest funders of rightwing agit-prop organizations, spending $$ millions each year on groups like the Cato Institute, the Federalist Law Foundation, the Heartland Institute, and the Heritage Foundation. Their father was the founder of the John Birch Society.

The local chapter has its own website.  Here are some samples of articles posted on it:

The local chapter organized the tea party held in Concord on April 15. The head of AFP-New Hampshire is Corey Lewandowski. He was Bob Smith's campaign manager in his 2002 primary fight against John Sununu, and pulled off the feat of making Sununu look like a moderate. He is (in)famous for questioning whether New Hampshire could vote for a Palestinian to be their Senator when we were engaged in a war against terrorism.

And Lou D'Allassandro, a DEMOCRAT Senator, is guest speaker at an Americans for Prosperity event?  Is this odd, or am I missing something?

I have no idea... (0.00 / 0)
I have no idea why d'Allesandro is speaking before AFP-NH, but my guess is that this is part of his pro-gambling efforts.

Lou is a good Democrat, but he works very bipartisanly.  I wouldn't worry about it, especially since it looks like this will not be the biennium casino-type gambling comes to the Granite State.
