Wedding Day Open Thread

by: Dean Barker

Wed Jun 03, 2009 at 05:55:49 AM EDT

Today's the day.  New Hampshire will write a chapter in the book of civil rights, or it won't.

There is still time to contact your legislators. And if you can, show your support for marriage at the rally in Concord today.

Seems appropriate to have a voice from the church on a wedding day. Bishop Gene Robinson:

I am here today praying for you, praying that you will do what you know is right, and to do it now. I am praying that you will find courage. Courage to rise above your political considerations.

Courage to lead.

If full marriage equality will be right some day, it is right today. Don't give in to fearmongers who want you to believe that citizens don't want a fair New Hampshire. We do.

This is a Marriage Equality Open Thread.

It's 6:49 AM... (4.00 / 2)
About to leave for Concord and the State House.  Hoping that everyone reading your Marriage Equality Open Thread will not just read, but will do something -- even just one thing.  Call, write a Legislator, attend the Rally, visit the State House.  It will be close -- ONE VOTE may make the difference!  We can do this.  Equality.  2009. Today.

Jim, you have already done the impossible by getting New Hampshire this close ... (0.00 / 0)
... but here's hoping that your fellow legislators and our Governor will get us all the way there.

JIm I got you beat (0.00 / 0)
I left Bridgeport CT at 4:30 this morning so I could get to State House...

note to close readers: this might be sarcastic so think twice before reading to candidates for use in their attacks on each other

What time is the vote? (0.00 / 0)
Unable to attend the rally due, but following the thread...Equality Now!

"Just because you do not take an interest in politics, doesn't mean politics won't take an interest in you" - Pericles, 430 BCE

Yay New Hampshire! You can do it! (0.00 / 0)
.... I'm hoping and praying for a good result here in the Granite State. Keeping my fingers crossed too. I've also written the Governor several times on this. Please everyone contact your representatives' offices! Let's do this! Let's not wait another year for equality!

Dean on NHPR (4.00 / 2)
Great job Dean! Stellar commentary.
Chairman Buckley was great,too.
Chairman Sununu...not so much.

Was it my imagination (4.00 / 2)
or did Sununu get more airtime than Ray? Maybe it just seemed longer because he was regurgitating the untrue meme about the state budget.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, the budget crafted in '07 was NOT significantly higher than previous ones. Necessary items were put in, whereas in past years,  the Republicans purposely low-balled everything, and then department heads had to go to the Fiscal Committee to get funding. So the money was spent, just not in the budget. Gee, who does that sound like?

The budget increase last session, when all is said and done, kept basic pace with the rate of inflation.

It did kinda seem like that (4.00 / 1)
But I feel like Ray was a lot more precise and articulate. Like you said, Sununu just regurgitated GOP talking points. Good show though.

Knoy for Congress!

[ Parent ]
It actually increased my (4.00 / 3)
understanding of Governor Lynch as a political figure. I see better where he is coming from, which can get lost in the fray of policy ideals and realities.

[ Parent ]
Sorry I can not be there (4.00 / 1)
Work!
I have said a prayer, however.

"When you get to the end of your rope, tie a knot and hang on."  Franklin D. Roosevelt

pacing... fingers crossed (4.00 / 1)
for a positive outcome today. I wrote yet another round of emails to reps and senators yesterday.

Madeleine Albright:
I have attended a number of conferences designed to promote understanding between the United States and people who live in Muslim-majority states. According to Muslim speakers at such events, one fact stands out: When the cold war ended, America needed an enemy to replace Communism and chose Islam.

Passed Senate (0.00 / 0)
Just heard on WBUR that it passed the Senate--no surprise--and is on to the House.

for anyone interested, the bill in question is HB73... (0.00 / 0)
...a companion bill to HB436 (in addition to companion bill HB310).

docket is here.

senate approved the conference report by the familiar 14-10 vote.

btw, live audio stream of house is here... (0.00 / 0)
here (microsoft).

they just voted on SB180, now moving on to SB40 which follows the order listed in the calendar, to which our bill (HB73) was added just yesterday so it will presumably be last.

Thank you (4.00 / 2)
to BlueHampshire. I am a long time reader and finally was able to register. I always check here here for excellent coverage and discussion of our state's current events. You're all an absolutely essential force in New Hampshire's ability to become an equal, free, and better state. I admire your activism and drive, and I hope that participating on this site will help me to become more involved

Thanks again! Keep it up -- NH needs you!

thank you, gad22 (4.00 / 1)

Any estimates on vote timing? (0.00 / 0)
<fingers crossed>

Last time (0.00 / 0)
Was around 3:00 I think (although that was the Senate decision). Hopefully it will be soon! I have the Union Leader (ugh) and this site on refresh every few minutes

I really hope this passes, it would make such a difference in this state and bring us to the front line on progression. Otherwise the anti gay-marriage fighters will have a field day... They already lied enough about the most recent failure:

http://tinyurl.com/oxwamk

And yet they neglected to mention that the reason it didn't pass was because of Lynch's "religious protection" demands. Not because NH is against gay marriage.

TIME (0.00 / 0)
That's 3 ET right... or NOON where I am.

[ Parent ]
Looks like this (SB 190) is the last one on the main calendar... (4.00 / 1)
And HB 73 is the only one on the supplementary calendar.  So should be soon - probably (as you said) at 3p ET.
