"Pedophile," "Same-Sex Marriage"

by: Dean Barker

Thu Jun 04, 2009 at 21:36:59 PM EDT

So, I almost never buy a newspaper, but on rare occasions, I'll pick one up to commemorate a major event.  As I did this morning to take note of the historic news about marriage equality.

The Concord Monitor had a giant photo and headline.  It seemed appropriate given that it's state level news that reverberated across the nation and the world.

The Union Leader headlined with "Pedophile committed to state hospital" across the top.

To the right of those words was a picture of John Lynch signing the bills, underneath which read "Same-sex marriage law signed."

That is all.

From a report (4.00 / 4)
on The NHPR website

But some gay marriage critics see something far different on the horizon. Mont Vernon republican William O'Brien says the rush to get the bill passed obscured a flaw that he claims will pave the way for more than simply same-sex marriages.

"Democrats have so poorly crafted their bill that any religion's doctrine would take precedent over NH law. There are religions that allow for multiple spouse marriages. Those religions can now come to NH and say, 'we allow for multiple wives, you can't stop us from doing that.'

It amazes me how many "reasons" some Republicans give to limit freedom and equality. Certain Reps went on in on in public with the weirdest scenarios, spun from strange fantasies.

A few weeks ago, the  Rep  quoted above was claiming marriage equality will lead to never ending lawsuits about pensions, now it's something else.

There is no logic, no argument, so they have to stoop to lies, innuendo and juxtapositons in hopes of swaying public opinion.

It won't work.

And For An Attorney... (4.00 / 1)
...it's surprising how he can misread a bill.  Scary thing is he votes on these things.  I guess since some of our friendly opponents can misread issues, they can also misread sentences.

actually (0.00 / 0)
The bills Lynch signed into law Wednesday actually strengthened the prohibitions against polygamy.

The Republicans kept bringing up polygamy even though in fact no polygamists came to Concord this spring to ask for the right to marry.

I heard that report on the radio (0.00 / 0)
And you can listen at the link (recommended!).

It was balanced in the sense of having voices on both sides speak (including Jim Splaine), but the contrast in presentation could hardly have been more stark; you can't hear the joy and cheering of supporters in the transcript, nor the dejection of opponents. The lady from Manchester "clutching a religious pamphlet" sounded crushed and judgmental. O'Brien was phoning it in. Compared to the specific joy of those who will gain equality? They know they lost, and they know they won't be able to roll back equality.

When civil unions passed... (4.00 / 2)
Right wing Republicans said it would lead to litigation. Still waiting.

"When you get to the end of your rope, tie a knot and hang on."  Franklin D. Roosevelt

Wait, so... (0.00 / 0)
Are you saying the Union Leader's headline wasn't about Sheila Labarre?

Look how the UL and The Telegraph cover the same article on Bishop Robinson (0.00 / 0)
An AP article on Bishop Gene Robinson getting churches to embrace gay marriage appeared this morning.

The Nashua Telegraph's version featured a full 20+ paragraph article that took 1/4 of the page with a 1/4 page photo of Bishop Robinson (page 2).

The Union Leader version was only 4 paragraphs with a smaller photo of Bishop Robinson and Mo Baxley that took approx. 1/8 of a page (page A3).

I noticed they never posted that front page online... (0.00 / 0)
Yesterday, they had Wednesday's front page posted online.  Today is Fridays.

Little request... (0.00 / 0)
If it's possible, can anyone scan the Concord Monitor's page with the story on it? I can't get the newspaper, and I'd really like to see what they wrote.. thanks. :)
