Two Visions of the New Hampshire Republican Party

by: Dean Barker

Mon Jun 08, 2009 at 05:46:51 AM EDT

Former Republican Governor Walter Peterson, today:
By signing the same-sex marriage legislation into law, Lynch continued the proud New Hampshire tradition of protecting individual liberties, and I again applaud his strong leadership.

I believe this is an issue of fairness. We learned long ago that separate is not equal.

...New Hampshire people, including many of my fellow Republicans, have long stood against discrimination. Simply put, this is not a partisan issue, nor is it a political one. This is about people, our people, and how they should be treated. Treating everyone fairly is a founding principle of this state and this nation.

Former Republican Governor (and current NHGOP Chairman) John H. Sununu, in April:
Bradley could be counted on to sustain a Lynch veto of the gay marriage and transgender discrimination legislation, "if he (Lynch) finds the strength to veto that garbage," Sununu said.

Peterson And Sununu (4.00 / 1)
Peterson and Sununu -- the difference between a "visionary" and a "reactionary."  My first term in the New Hampshire House was when Walter Peterson was Governor.  I loved the guy.  My final term in the State Senate was when John Sununu was Governor.  I was glad to leave for a while.

Mom used to say, "garbage in, garbage out."

How dare Gov Peterson show empathy for others? (4.00 / 4)

It's pretty clear that former Gov. Peterson is nothing more than a RINO and should be summarily drummed out of the party! The GOP circular firing squad needs to take immediate action  before his centrist ideas infect others.

Walt is a 100% standup guy. (4.00 / 2)
Unfortunately, the enlightened position stated above did not trickle down to Peterson fils this time, as reflected in his party line vote. Andy is usually pretty reasonable, this time maybe he was afraid that the party leadership would spank. Disappointing.

They. Don't. Care.
We do.
Rinse, repeat.

Torn Between Two Lovers (4.00 / 4)
I noticed way too many Republicans looking like they were "torn between two lovers," to recall a long-ago song.  I talked with many one on one trying to persuade them to come over from the dark side.  I think that if we had a secret ballot, HB 436 would have received over 300 House votes.

It's a shame Republicans weren't more willing to do the right thing, though.  I understand, but it's shameful nevetheless.  It gives me hope, however, that no matter if we "lost" the majority next time, marriage equality will not be repealed.

I Have Great Hopes For 2010 (4.00 / 1)
...but the pendulum of politics is a reality.  It virtually never fails.  The way we keep winning, though, is to keep in mind that we could lose, so we work harder, stay more unified, avoid putting fellow Democrats in frying pans during primaries, and have leaders who keep thinking "big tent" and "let's get on the same page" rather than "think alike" and "follow me, no questions asked."

Two More Cycles (4.00 / 1)
That's how long I think it will take for the formerly grand old party to learn they should jettison the hard right which keeps weighing them down.

No'm Sayn?

I hope you're wrong. (0.00 / 0)
I'm totally fine with the idea of them getting fringier and fringier for five or six cycles before falling into Perpetual Third Party status and yielding the official opposition role to the Libertarians.

... I didn't say I think you're wrong, just that I hope it comes out that way.

Only the left protects anyone's rights.
