Robert Novak, 1931-2009

Someone I know once dealt with Novak, and said he was a nice guy. Someone else (a Post employee) told someone who told me he was a hard-working, committed journalist.

Obviously he and I didn't agree on much, but may he rest in peace.

Novak was a NH Primary staple... (4.00 / 2)
2012 will be the first NH Primary in a generation that won't be covered by Bob Novak. I last saw him the night before the 08 Primary outside of the Merrimack Restaurant...another landmark that has left us.

2012 starts today.

Novak's Other Obsession (4.00 / 1)
Robert Novak was a rarity: a celebrity columnist/commentator who never quit being a real reporter. Sure, he pontificated, but he always wanted that news hook in every column.

He was also a real college basketball fan.

Novak was for years a loyal season ticket holder and supporter of the University of Maryland Terps. He was a University of Illinois alum who adopted Maryland after settling in Washington - and, unlike DC powerbrokers who hung out in the luxury boxes at Redskins' games while doing deals, he contributed to the UM Athletics Fund and bought his season tickets at courtside.

I ran into Novak prior to a Maryland-UMass NIT game in College Park years ago when I was in my sportscaster life. He was there early, nearly an hour before game time, watching the visiting team warm up with a critical eye as he worked his way to the bottom of a tub of popcorn. Always the reporter, he asked good questions about the skills, tendencies and past performance of the UMass players.

Paul Begala mentioned Novak's love of sports in an appreciation today. Novak typically followed the Terps to big road games, rarely missing an ACC tournament, and, as Begala recalled, if it came to being a talking head or cheering on Maryland, there was no question which took priority:

When James Carville and I joined "Crossfire" in 2002, CNN had a much-hyped debut planned for April 1. Bob didn't care. Maryland was playing for the NCAA basketball championship and he was going to be there. Producers pleaded, but Bob was unmoved. He did the show via satellite from Atlanta, Georgia, and when Coach Gary Williams cut down the net for the Terps, Bob was courtside.

Smile and slip in the knife. (0.00 / 0)
I think it is more appropriate to hope for Valerie Plame getting some rest. Pretty unlikely for her or Thomas Eagleton. I see no sign that forgiveness helps anything with regard to those of us left behind. No longer is the fear of the fires of hell able to constrain even the behavior of journalists though I think he would be more aptly be included in the ranks of opinionators. Never an appology for anything. I would not expect anonymous sources to be a highly valued commodity for him now. "For there is nothing hidden that will not be disclosed, and nothing concealed that will not be known or brought out into the open." Don't we wish?
