Happy New Year, New Hampshire

( - promoted by Dean Barker)

I just got back from the party. Our hosts had a commitment ceremony 5 years ago, in another state, when it meant nothing legal, and still meant everything to them. They had a civil union two years ago, when it became legal in New Hampshire, because their commitment to each other is central to their lives. And they had a recommittment celebration tonight, at 12:01, when the paperwork they filed finally turned their civil union into a marriage.

I once thought civil union vs. marriage was a trivial distinction. I was wrong about that. There was not a dry eye tonight, and my friends are married. It was the most meaningful and joyful New Year celebration I have ever been to. Congratulations, New Hampshire, and Happy New Year!

Right there with you kite, I was also on the sidelines. The struggle goes on but with new resolve, and new allies.Hard fought victories will require hard fought defense against repeal. I like you came to understand the Human Rights issue and our Constitution a little better this year. Rights for one are rights for all or none.

sharing their love and caring together in marriage.  What a wonderful thing.  New Hampshire, and America, and all of us, are a bit stronger and better because of that.

As a straight woman married to a man (4.00 / 1)
I am so happy that we are becoming a truly civilized state.  Still some work to do, and we have to hold on to what we have gained, but NH has changed a lot and it is good to see the power for good working, with love and caring for each other becoming the mood, rather than each for himself and the devil take the hindmost.

May we continue to prove Reagan wrong when he said those devilish word, "Government is not the solution to our problems, government is the problem."  Those words have set us back and kept us back for too many years.  So here's to all the participants in our government who made these marriages possible, and who need all the support we can give them.

Well, government is certainly a problem to the predators and (0.00 / 0)
deprivators among us.  It has taken a very long time for us to realize that some people feel good when they see others suffer--an even longer time to realize that politics had become infested by illusionists who delight in misleading and deceiving the public.
It's my sense that's the biggest difference in Washington is a decrease in the amount of lying.  There's a reason for that formulation--"the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth."

if we can get our media to acknowledge lying on the part of the right, instead of just providing us with a "balanced" approach, which equates the lies on one side with the facts on the other, we might be able to explain to the voters that Medicare is a government program, for example, and it works just fine.

We believe in prosperity & opportunity, strong communities, healthy families, great schools, investing in our future and leading the world by example. We are Democrats; we are the change you're looking for.
