This Monday Stand With Concord High Against Religious Homophobes From Kansas

by: JonnyBBad

Sat Jan 02, 2010 at 23:15:19 PM EST

They are well funded types who supported the repeal referendum in Maine, and are generally well organized. They are coming to protest the existence of an openly gay students org.

A time to be silent and a time to speak. The anti-gay (anti-Catholic, anti-American, anti-Jewish, anti-everything) Westboro Baptist Church from Kansas will be protesting at Concord (NH) High School Monday morning 7:15 - 7:45 am. Please come and stand with those of us who support the high school's effort to support ALL their students. The time is now!

Haters is an understatement n/t (4.00 / 2)

Who funds this (0.00 / 0)
professional hate group?

They have a near non-stop nationwide picketing outfit.  That costs money.

GMD had a good piece of advice when they came to a VT school in September.

I'm conflicted about whether a group like this benefits from attention, but on the other hand, I think a strong statement of condemnation from a group like Cornerstone would be redound to the good too.

it would be interesting to know (4.00 / 1)
where the money comes from. Because I don't want to be too cynical, I won't speculate.

One source of revenue anyway (4.00 / 4)
is lawsuits against people who take punches at them.

Here is an excellent post and comment thread on Making Light:

and note the links to various expose articles.

What Dean said: Click that link. (4.00 / 1)
And settle down for a good read, a few good links, a healthy chunk of enlightenment, and maybe a  chuckle to wash the taste out of your mouth afterward.

mocking them (4.00 / 2)
is the only way to go. Michael Moore pioneered mocking the Phelps Phamily in his TV show, The Awful Truth. Check out the Sodomobile!

(NSFW, and not for the easily offended.)

Remember what they want: (4.00 / 1)
They want to be yelled at.

They want to screamed at.

They want to be insulted.

They want to be called haters.

They want to be argued with.

They want to be taken seriously.

They want to be scorned and spat on by those they see as champions of sin and depravity.

They want to have their fear-driven hate reinforced by the hate of their opponents.

They want to reinforce their self-image as the vanguard of the army of God daring to assault the citadel of Sin, as faithful and beleaguered partisans of Good beset by hateful partisans of the Dark One.

They don't see themselves as a pitiable gaggle of psychological basketcases desperately grasping at straws to eke out some sense of self-worth.

They see themselves as Fingolfin facing down Morgoth before the gates of Angband, with all the fierce and fearless defiance of overwhelming powers of malice that entails.

They want us to help them maintain that self-image.

Our job is not to give them what they want.

Our job is to do right by New Hampshire, and by ourselves, and by the fragments of brotherly love cowering unheeded in the souls of these sad fools.

For my part, if I wind up going, I'm hoping to wear an Obama button, dig up or borrow a PFLAG, rainbow or marriage equality button, and bring some donuts, coffee and hot chocolate to share with them.

Though maybe the buttons had best stay off until after the donuts and coffee.

h/t you (4.00 / 3)
This is what counter-protesting should look like:

We will be silent, walking around the school. (4.00 / 3)
7:00 - 7:45 Monday morning members of the community that support Concord High School's policy of inclusion will be walking around the perimeter of the school. We will there to provide silent support of the school. An anti-gay group is scheduled to be there to protest the school's administration. There will be some folks handing out rainbow ribbons ... See Moreribbons for those that want to wear one. I hope that you will consider coming and feel free to spread the word. If you want more information about the anti-gay group who will be at the school, please Google Westboro Baptist Church.

The Monitor Reports they will be also at.... (0.00 / 0)
The Monitor is reporting that they also plan to be at city hall and the Episcopal diocese."Horrid."

Scarey (4.00 / 3)
If you think anti-gay groups can't cause real trouble, read this story in today's NY Times and you'll change your mind; it is about the connection between a high profile visit of three anti-gay American activists to Uganda, and the introduction of a bill to institute the death penalty for gays and lesbians in that country:

http://www.nytimes.com/2010/01...

Due to pressure from other countries, the bill is now being "watered down" to change the punishment to life imprisonment. God help us.

not here not now (4.00 / 1)
Thanks to Debby Butler we had a large assembly and it was peacable. WMUR's early newscast would not show Westboro Baptist's signs due the graphic and digusting nature.Good call. See my facebook page if you want to get the gist.

About 25 students marched out the school and up to the corner singing Amazing Grace. Even more touching, they surrounded the creeps and sang "Jesus Loves You"
You are not human if that moment did not bring a tear to your eye.
Live Free Or Die. Governor LYnch and our Legislators are under increasing pressure to reverse the progress made last session.
Let our motto be,'we won't let them'.

Kudos to principal Chris Rath (0.00 / 0)
for coming outside to stand in of her charges.
