Another One Bites the Dust

by: Zandra Rice Hawkins

( - promoted by Dean Barker)

At 12:20 am this morning, my own community of Goffstown said no to the vote to discriminate.

Of the towns that Granite State Progress has organized, we're seeing a great number of wins - Rindge, Rye, Winchester, Alstead, Deerfield, Bethlehem, Goffstown, Wolfeboro, and Londonderry (town charter) all rejected the vote to discriminate.

If you're looking for the tools, folks - they are right here.

Thank you for the resources! (4.00 / 1)
Great job putting the information together, Zandra!  I'd also like to applaud all of my fellow Goffstown residents who spoke so eloquently in support of equality, and at such a late hour.

I'd also like to point out that the final vote to amend the discriminatory warrant article down to a meaningless stub was 33-28.  Every warm body in these meetings counts, people.  If you or anyone you know live in the towns which have yet to decide on the discrimination petition, get it together!  The first recorded vote (on an earlier article) was 87-86, so endurance is the key.

Does anyone know if the discrimination warrant article has been approved in any towns? (n/t) (0.00 / 0)

It was approved in (0.00 / 0)
New Boston.

Also, in my town, which is not SB-2, it will be on the warrant at town meeting. It doesn't take many signatures to do this.

On the warrant at Bow Town Meeting n/t (0.00 / 0)

note to close readers: this might be sarcastic so think twice before reading to candidates for use in their attacks on each other

Hampton passed it on to the ballot (0.00 / 0)
Hampton had a long town meeting (more than 12 hours). The warrant article came up around 8PM. It was passed on to the ballot with no discussion and no vote. We'll just have to beat it there.

I'm confused about the number of towns that have petitions (0.00 / 0)
From looking at your website - does it mean only 50 petitions have been submitted?

Does this also mean that the rest of the SB2 towns did not submit successful peitions?

Or do you not have enough information?

Will the Union Leader ever cover the towns that rejected the petitions? They did have a Page One article when the petition movement was started.

Could be (0.00 / 0)
Here in Hudson they didn't manage to get enough signatures which surprised me.

There are more towns coming (0.00 / 0)
We tried to call thru every town that would have a meeting this week - there are a few that we couldn't get the information in time, and there were a good amount that don't have the article.

The deadline for petitions for traditional town meetings just passed, so we're calling thru those now. If folks can help, that would be great. We're collecting town meeting date, time, location, article # and getting a copy of the petition signatures.

If you have these for your town, email them over, or if you can help, send me a note and I'll send a short list of towns for you to call. info@granitestateprogress.org

Coverage (0.00 / 0)
The news outlets in the state have done a lousy job covering the progress of the warrant article. Haven't read a thing about it in either the Telegraph or the Union Leader.

One thing is covered on the list - some towns like Rindge have rendered the wording on the warrant article meaningless so even though the article is going to be put to vote, its already a win.

Londonderry is... (0.00 / 0)
The denial in Londonderry is especially significant because that is Al Baldasaro's town.  It's also traditionally one of the more rightwing and more Republican communities in NH, even though it is right next door to Manchester.

Completely true (0.00 / 0)
One resident said at the public hearing, "NH is the live free or die state. Al Baldasaro thinks it is the live free or die state unless you're gay."

Foster's Op-Ed (4.00 / 1)
Coverage in other papers may be scarce, but there's a nice Op-Ed in Fosters:

"Gay marriage: The debate is over, time to move on"

It wasn't just an Op-Ed - it was an Editorial! (0.00 / 0)
Does anyone know if Foster's took a stand when the bill was being discussed last year?

Great Job, Zandra... (0.00 / 0)
...and all those good people in those towns.  I think that the good people in our towns will not vote to take rights away from their neighbors.  New Hampshire is a loving, wonderful place to call "home," and that includes every town and every city in every part of our state.  We have reason to be very proud of our citizens!
