Open Thread: Master of the Galaxy!

by: Dean Barker

Thu Feb 18, 2010 at 06:24:12 AM EST

Courtesy PHB, a selection from the transcript of Rep. Cebrowski's Marriage Is Make-Believe argument:
And I've got a grandson who's got all the Darth Vader gear.  Light saber, helmet, shirt and so on.  And he says to me, "Gaggy I am Darth Vader", and I say "Yes, yes, of course you are!  You are the master of the Death Star.  You are the master of the Galaxy!"  And he absolutely loves it!

This fantasy, these flights of imagination, this game-playing, is great.  It's fun.  With children.  With children.  But here we are ladies and gentlemen.  We're talking about adults.  Adults.  This is serious business.

This is an Open Thread.

Princess Cebrowski (4.00 / 2)
Luckily for Cebrowski, he did give a much better speech earlier in the day about Lyme Disease. But his speech about gay marriage was still an insult to our intelligence.

Nancy Elliott actually did speak, but only after the day's business was over: she apologized for making unfactual statements about the Nashua school system.

More incoherence (4.00 / 3)
The more comments I read from Elliot, Baldassaro and now Cebrowski, the more I am struck by how incoherent they are.  How can you read the above quote and not ask, "What are these people talking about?"  Pictures of naked men in elementary schools, babies being sold for $10,000, and Darth Vader - none of which have anything to do with marriage equality.

"When you get to the end of your rope, tie a knot and hang on."  Franklin D. Roosevelt

Intention v. act (0.00 / 0)
I think some people are incapable of distinguishing between the intention and the act.  And it works both ways.  If they didn't mean to do something they did, they didn't do it.  And if they didn't do something they meant to do, they did it.  The intention is taken for the act.
So, for example, Saddam Hussein had WMD because he intended to have them and George W. Bush could declare "mission accomplished" because that's what he intended to do.
I suspect that people who think this way don't consider it at all peculiar.
It's not that the idea is more important than reality; it's that they can't tell the difference. Conservative theorists have taken to referring to George W. Bush and Cheney as pure idealists, intent on conforming the world to their vision.

Cebrowski (0.00 / 0)
Last year during the HB436 Floor debate, Cebrowski gave a lengthy speech comparing marriage to peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. You can't have a jelly and jelly sandwich, for example. All a peanut butter and jelly sandwich can be is peanut butter and jelly. And it just got worse from there.

There's a YouTube video floating around somewhere where someone set this speech to "It's Peanut Butter Jelly Time!" (the Dancing Banana meme).

With enemies like this, who needs allies...

Somebody call Bradbury and Orwell (0.00 / 0)
If this is true, it's a great example of why we need a Supreme Court that isn't full of right-wing ideologues who don't know how to use a computer.

The Lower Merion School District issued the laptops, outfitted with webcams, to each of its approximately 1,800 high school students, the suit says.

The suit alleges that the student verified through the assistant principal that  the school district "in fact has the ability to remotely activate the webcam contained in a student's personal laptop computer issued by the school district at any time it chose and to view and capture whatever images were in front of the webcam, all without the knowledge, permission or authorization of any persons then and there using the laptop computer."

Once again, that's what the lawsuit alleges, so don't take it as fact yet.  Still, if it is, this should be taken very seriously.  Global society is evolving and our digital privacy policies need to evolve too.

Do Scott Brown voters know (0.00 / 0)
that Scott Brown likened them to a guy who flew a plane into an IRS building?

all the little children (4.00 / 2)
As I sat there in session and listened to Cebrowski, all I could think was that he was talking down to us, like we were children.

"Bad bad, boys and girls. Stop playing gay marriage."

Someone needs to grow up. I don't think it's me (us).
