Eddie Edwards: Blurring partisanship and law enforcement?

by: Peter Sullivan

Sun Mar 07, 2010 at 17:31:53 PM EST

State liquor enforcement chief Eddie Edwards is leading the charge against Democratic state representative Dan Eaton for allegedly "interfering" with an enforcement action, and bemoans "political" influence.

Well, it's funny that Eddie seems to have singled out an establishment with Democratic ties. Let's take a look at Eddie's Facebook page.

Favorite television shows:
Fox News

Pages:
Republican National Committee
Ted Gatsas for Mayor
Fox News
NH Republican State Committee

Groups:
National Black Republican Association

Just pointing out that Eddie Edwards might have partisan motivations of his own.

What establishment with Democratic ties is he singling out? (0.00 / 0)
I'm not up to date. Is there a link or something?

Here are a couple of links (0.00 / 0)

Suffice to say that my experience with Edwards and his crew leads me to have a marked lack of confidence in the chief.

The agents of law enforcement are particularly (0.00 / 0)
jealous of their autonomy from citizen interference in or even review of their functions.  The polis has no business inspecting the lawman.
People who volunteer for public office to represent the polis start out thinking that the reason law enforcement functions are opaque is because most people don't have the time or interest to take an objective look--i.e. law enforcement is the perfect venue for representation.  Then they discover that law enforcement agencies brook NO inspection or inquiry.
Perhaps it's because the agents of law enforcement have gotten used to their "qualified immunity," which assures them that, as long as they follow the directives of their superiors on the force, they need be accountable to no-one for how they behave.  Any deprivation of citizens' rights is just a mistake.
In a sense, that's just corporate behavior in a nutshell.  Individual responsibility for behavior is effectively dissolved by acting in concert with the objectives of a group.  The Catholic Church has historically been a model.  Individuals were enabled to engage in all kinds of heinous behavior in service of the Church and even entirely selfish and self-centered injurious acts could be easily forgiven, if confessed.  If you 'fess up, you need not suffer the consequences of your acts and the secrecy of the confessional guarantees it.

There's a reason why Catholicism appeals to authoritarians.

Not all Catholics are authoritarians and not all (0.00 / 0)
authoritarians are Catholics.  I was actually thinking of the Bush boys, George and Jeb.

Daniel Berrigan baptized our third child.  Both he and his brother are anti-authoritarians.

George Bush isn't Catholic (0.00 / 0)
Raised Episcopalian, usually attends a Methodist service.

True, but when he went to visit the Pope he was (0.00 / 0)
thinking of converting, like his brother Jeb and his friend Tony Blair.  The significance of what attracts Dubya is unknown.  He also expressed an interest in being a dictator.  His holding hands with the Saudi Prince apparently had none.

When a person's behavior is largely instinctive and reactive to the moment, it's hard to assign predictive value.

Would you please provide links to your factual assertions that George Bush, Jeb Bush and Tony Blair considered converting to Catholicism?

I think she's right on Jeb and Blair (0.00 / 0)
Jeb's wife is Latino, and I think he converted. Blair has attended a Catholic church, but I'm not sure if he ever officially converted. Of course, the theological jump from Anglican to Catholic isn't exactly a huge leap.

Edwards receives bipartisan criticism (0.00 / 0)
Mr. Edwards was the subject of bipartisan criticism at today's executive council meeting.

Councilor John Shea, D-Nelson, was also upset.

"I'm more than disturbed with Mr. Edwards comments made publicly while there's an investigation going on," he said. "I think that's unprofessional for him to comment publicly."Councilor Raymond Wieczorek, R-Manchester, asked whether Delaney can take any action against Edwards.

"My job is to proceed forward and assure we complete a thorough investigation," he said.

"What he's doing isn't proper," Wieczorek said. "I would hope somebody would tell him."

I haven't been following this matter too closely, but public comments by an agency head about the substance of the matter are inappropriate.
