One Month of Handshakes and Living Rooms

by: Dean Barker

Thu Apr 08, 2010 at 20:27:53 PM EDT

Thirty house parties in thirty days.

That's a lot of handshakes and living rooms.  It's also a clever way to package day-to-day grassroots campaign work.

If Ann Kuster can run a congressional office the way she's running this campaign, I think our lil' country district would be getting some good representation down there in the Village.

Thanks Dean. (4.00 / 2)
It is a bit of an experiment, to be honest.  We purposefully chose to take on more than our staff could possibly manage on our own - in effect, forcing us to rely heavily on volunteer hosts and co-hosts to build these events.

Some will be big, some will be small, but we will be both (a) expanding our circle and (b) building a tested grassroots volunteer organization.  Those things pay dividends in the fall (and for what it's worth, I think they make you a better member of Congress too).

GreyMike, I hope you got the email with the whole schedule!

Not only 30 House parties (4.00 / 1)
Imagine a full time job, and not a night to relax at home with family and friends for the next month...These are 12-16 hour days for candidate and staff...they work all day making the calls, writing out the invites, and then head to these events.
Annie is the hardest worker of all. She fulfills Bresler's law of call time. To raise the kind of cash she needs, she's on the phone for hours a day.
This ain't easy folks...but Colin is absolutely right. There is no better way to learn about the needs of your district and get to be really good at communicating them. If you've ever tried selling anything...you know what I mean...you have to be able to deal with negativity and objections, and learn to overcome them with thoughtful reasoning. It is a testament in these difficult economic times, in which Congress' reputation is at an all time low, that Annie is winning the trust of the 2nd CD.

Annie is building it.

When the time comes, when we hit the "sweet spot" leading up to election day, this campaign will have it's ducks in a row.

We are concerned with the mood of the electorate, let's be honest. Down here, I just watched an established political pro get out hustled by simple 'sweat equity.' Scott Brown's success was built handshake by handshake.

Imho, elections are won when a neighbor tells another neighbor that they met Candidate X and she/he was honest, sincere, friendly, compassionate, ect.

Annie, at any of these events, may get 25-30 people in a room. If only 5 of them lift a finger to help, but 20 walk a way with a positive view rested on their lips, election day will be wonderful.
