Word is spreading that Governor John Lynch confirmed today that he is intends to run for a fourth term. I want to be one of the first to say, I stand with John Lynch in this effort.
Governor Lynch has maintained steady, effective leadership since he was sworn in back in 2003. Our state had been rocked by a series of ethical scandals tied to the Benson administration; under John Lynch's leadership, we have seen none of the shenanigans or secretive governing that took place in those long two Benson years.
John Lynch has always been truthful to the people of New Hampshire. When he started this third term, at one of the bleakest points of the recession, he said that not only would the state not be able to do all that we wanted, it would not be able to do all that it should. He, along with our legislature, has taken and continues to take steps to deal with the fallout from the reckless Bush years that has decimated state governments across the country.
Because of his steady stewardship, New Hampshire has lost fewer jobs and fared better in thhis recession than most.
One of the characteristics of John Lynch that makes him the right governor for New Hampshire is that he is a moderate voice in an independent state. New Hampshire voters by and large support a small government that stays out of our private lives. We reject ideologues who are more interested in telling us what to do and with who, than in effectively managing state government. That is why we will re-elect John Lynch.
Some men and women would, after three terms, and dealing with the fallout of slashed revenues due to a major recession, facing one more election campaign, would say no thank you, put the portrait up on the wall and retire to senior statesman status. But John Lynch is not going to run away from the tough work. He is going to finish the job, keeping our state on track to emerge from this recession and move toward the future.
So, I am standing with John Lynch in this election, and I hope that all of you do, too. The Johnny Stephen Republicans are going to come after Governor Lynch with an aresenal of negative, nasty ads and direct mail pieces. They already are using 3rd party groups like the homophobic National Organization [not really] For Marriage to engage in fear and smear. We need to be as excited and work as hard as we did in 2004, 2006 and 2008 to show that in New Hampshire, we reject extremist ideologues and out of state groups who peddle a hateful agenda. We also need to elect someone who has shown that he has the experience, the ability and the knowledge to lead our state, whether in good times or bad.
