I Stand With John Lynch

by: Kathy Sullivan 2

Fri Apr 16, 2010 at 11:07:16 AM EDT

( - promoted by Jennifer Daler)

Word is spreading that Governor John Lynch confirmed today that he is intends to run for a fourth term. I want to be one of the first to say, I stand with John Lynch in this effort.

Governor Lynch has maintained steady, effective leadership since he was sworn in back in 2003.  Our state had been rocked by a series of ethical scandals tied to the Benson administration; under John Lynch's leadership, we have seen none of the shenanigans or secretive governing that took place in those long two Benson years.

John Lynch has always been truthful to the people of New Hampshire. When he started this third term, at one of the bleakest points of the recession, he said that not only would the state  not be able to do all that we wanted, it would not be able to do all that it should. He, along with our legislature, has taken and continues to take steps to deal with the fallout from the reckless Bush years that has decimated state governments across the country.

Kathy Sullivan 2 :: I Stand With John Lynch
Because of his steady stewardship, New Hampshire has lost fewer jobs and fared better in thhis recession than most.

One of the characteristics of John Lynch that makes him the right governor for New Hampshire is that he is a moderate voice in an independent  state. New Hampshire voters by and large support a small government that stays out of our private lives. We reject ideologues who are more interested in telling us what to do and with who, than in effectively managing state government.  That is why we will re-elect John Lynch.

Some men and women would, after three terms, and dealing with the fallout of slashed revenues due to a major recession, facing one more election campaign, would say no thank you, put the portrait up on the wall and retire to senior statesman status. But John Lynch is not going to run away from the tough work. He is going to finish the job, keeping our state on track to emerge from this recession and move toward the future.

So, I am standing with John Lynch in this election, and I hope that all of you do, too. The Johnny Stephen Republicans are going to come after Governor Lynch with an aresenal of negative, nasty ads and direct mail pieces. They already are using 3rd party groups like the homophobic National Organization [not really] For Marriage to engage in fear and smear. We need to be as excited and work as hard as we did in 2004, 2006 and 2008 to show that in New Hampshire, we reject extremist ideologues and out of state groups who peddle a hateful agenda.  We also need to elect someone who has shown that he has the experience, the ability and the knowledge to lead our state, whether in good times or bad.

Please join me in supporting John Lynch!

of course (4.00 / 1)
Kathy,I also am proud to stand with John Lynch for the reasons you put so well. I am proud to have been one of the 12 who stood with him when he walked into his first State Convention, relatively unknown to the current members in the Spring of 2004. Rapidly clearing the table of potential competition, his strong bi-partisan support and personal fortune were enough that all others who had intentions of running were dispatched to the sidelines. Replacing the arrogant fool Benson, and bringing civility and bi-partisanship back to the process of governing has been the hallmark of his years in the corner office.
He has been a good steward, with a rock steady hand on the tiller. A defender of individual rights, from opposing Real ID to supporting Marriage Equality,he is cautious and careful, some would say, to a fault. It is this characteristic that belies a deep understanding of the strong statutory limitations imposed by the archaic Executive Council. He keeps his cards close to his vest, and does what he thinks is right, irrespective of the conventional wisdom around Concord.

His next term will demand new solutions whatever the election year rhetoric. Budget deficits and a lack of appetite for revenue enhancement on the part of voters and legislators alike, has painted us into a corner. As did Governor Shaheen before him, I would suggest it is not imperative for the Governor to take the Pledge to win, though I believe that is his intent.
In my experience running and advising troubled companies, I learned a valuable lesson. "No one ever raised sales by lowering costs." We must continue to cut costs, but we must also simultaneously create new and durable revenue streams.
This is not about buzzwords like leadership or courage. Its like a family budget. You not only have to cut spending, but you take a second job, to increase your income.
Unless and until our outgo is matched by our income, we will sustain these deficits. No secrets, no magic.

I'm glad you support governor Lynch, despite your disagreement over the tax structure!

we have no disagreement (0.00 / 0)
Cutting won't get us there, practically speaking, and without gambling revenue where do we turn for more? I have no answer. I am not proposing an income tax solution, because I don't think its politically feasible. I do think the increased blood flow from basic service cuts will raise great pressure for revenue enhancement. What's your solution, if gambling fails to pass?

our tax structure (0.00 / 0)
Lean as we are, it is the other side of the same coin. When you have a lean structure, and you've cut the fat to the bone, where do you go next? Tell folks to have a nice day ?

Again I think it is responsible economics to look at both sources and uses of capital...we won't legalize pot under this Governor, and we won't have broad based taxes.

From what I gather we get over half our revenue from Liquor sales...travel and tourism, and manufacturing...raises the bulk of the balance. So the question remains, who's ox will be gored to get to balanced budget? The rich who can afford it, or the poor and middle class who can't?

And Yet You Say: (4.00 / 1)
"I am not proposing an income tax solution, because I don't think its politically feasible."

There will be very painful cuts. There will be real hikes in local taxes. Is that really more politically feasible? Is that really better?

And the image of all these reps and senators knowing an income tax is inevitable and fair, but guided instead by fear that "I don't think its politically feasible" is not a pretty one.

Backbone, please, somebody!!

Burt,
You are gonna knock yourself out on your own ideals.

The Dalai Lama is convinced that his version of our spiritual life is correct. I'd dare say he is committed to his ideals down to the bone.

Yet, other theologies co-exist with Bhuddism. How is it that the Dalai Lama's zeal does not permeate all of humanity?

Why doesn't yours?

What, pray tell, are John Lynch's ideals? (4.00 / 1)
He uses state employees as political pawns; badmouths the president's historic health care reforms; pledges fealty to an unfair and irresponsible tax structure; endorses Republican candidates for state senate and executive council; and joins John McCain at a campaign rally.

How are his core values any different than those of a Kelly Ayotte or a Charlie Bass?

America was not built on fear. America was built on courage, on imagination and an unbeatable determination to do the job at hand. -Harry Truman

I Am Not (0.00 / 0)
a Lynch supporter.  I will vote for him over anyone the Repubs put up, but without any particular pleasure.  That said, I believe that he does have a lot more moral fiber than Stephen, Ayotte, or Bass.  Unfortunately, he also has a businessman's attitude toward government, seeming to lack understanding that government exists to do things business has no incentive to do.

I went to an event with Gov. Patrick. Also in attendance were about 100 off duty Lowell cops protesting Patrick's policies. Many held signs that read, "Deval Hates Cops."

John, do the right thing and dump the pledge. It's long overdue.

But what about his precious approval rating? (0.00 / 0)
Isn't that what really matters?

The Subtext (0.00 / 0)
For Lynch, "The Pledge" just might be dead.

The point of the NOM Ad is as much to undermine Lynch's credibility on any so called pledge, as it is on marriage equality.

Let Lynch take the pledge. He is off the hook in the eyes of Republicans.

You can't always get everything that you want... (4.00 / 3)
But Lynch is the first governor/executive in this country who has signed a law that granted marriage equality. That serious support from the progressive community. http://www.bluehampshire.com/d...

Things I Know: (4.00 / 4)
* John Lynch signed marriage equality into law, and he had a politically expedient reason not to.

* John Lynch and all Republican gubernatorial candidates support The Pledge.

* There will not be a viable Democratic challenger to John Lynch in 2010.

* Karen Testerman, Jack Kimball, and John Stephen could all easily turn out to be worse than Craig Benson.

This one's easy: Go Lynch!

Can You Defend (0.00 / 0)
The governor's refusal to meet with cancer patients who came to Concord to discuss helping their healing with access to medical marijuana?
He has lots of time for other lobbyists, but not for cancer victims. Please, defend that.

What I am getting at: (4.00 / 2)
Elections are about choices:

Choice X is John Lynch:

Choice Y will be either: John Stephen, Karen Testerman, or Jack Kimball.

There is no Choice Z.

So. The next question is active involvement.

Normally, regarding Lynch I would have none.

But:

a) This may be a tough year for Dems. Imagine chances of medical marijuana passage with the loss of the state house majority, plus a Governor Stephen.

b) John Lynch signed marriage equality into law when, politically, he didn't need to.

Those two realities compel me to get involved.
